+110 Girls: Sometimes you feel pressure to take really challenging math and science classes just to prove you can, even though you might not actually want to, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Uh what makes this exclusive to girls?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Because girls are extremely underrepresented in math and science courses and the fields in general. If you're in a math class dominated by males, you feel as if you must do well not just for yourself, but to represent your entire gender. Probably should have been specified in the post, but oh well.

My calculus teacher got all excited when she found out I was in her class because I'm the first white girl who's taken AP calculus at our school since she started teaching... 10 years ago -.-

Seriously? Half of my calculus class has girls in it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's . . . extreme. I have noticed that there are a lot more Indians and Asians in my calculus class, and a lot more boys, but there are at least a few white girls in every math class I've taken.

I take those classes because I want to. Nobody pressures me into it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Same here. I'm a biology major because it's what I want to study, not because I'm out to prove society wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The reason I take those classes has nothing to do with proving my worth...I genuinely want to.

I'm a girl and I love science, especially astronomy and biology. I can sit for days flipping through an astronomy book. It's so fascinating to me! But math, I'm sorry, I'm absolutely hopeless in. Numbers just can't get through my head. And math is sort of... cold. There's no room for debate, really. I like to speak and debate with people and I like to toy around with concepts.

I'm a girl and I want to be an engineer because I want to.
