Oliver, Annie, and My Fair Lady form the holy trinity of musicals, amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
No, the holy trinity of musical is as follows: Fiddler on the Roof, Wicked, Singing in the Rain

I would like to point out that Wicked is not "best. musical. evar!!!1111!!!!!"
But it does have a large fanbase.

Ugh. People who go on about how Wicked is not, in your words, 'best. musical. evar!!!1111!!!!!' are SO pretentious that they annoy me a whole lot more than the people who originally say it. Me, I know plenty of people who are very into musicals and know a lot about them, who would put Wicked right up there in their top three.

How am I being pretentious? It is because I do not think Wicked is part of 'the holy trinity of musicals'? I pointed out my opinion. Also, I did not 'go on and on' about how Wicked is not the best. I said one sentence. ONE. I love Wicked. It was my first musical obsession. Does that make it my favorite? No. In my opinion, (and I know plenty about musicals. They're basically my life.) Wicked was great. The plot, characters, score, choreography, set, costumes. But there are some musicals that are just better.
My Holy Trinity of Musicals would be Les Miserables, Gypsy (Sondheim is god-like too!), and Next to Normal. All shows that changed theatre in a massive way.
Almost all of my friends are huge theatre geeks. And almost all of the wouldn't put Wicked in their top three.

Don't do musicals.
The Holy Trinity of plays, however, is A Midsummer Nights Dream, Our Town, and Angels in America.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, sweeney todd, phantom of the opera

A Very Potter Musical. Just had to get that out there.

Next to Normal, Gypsy, and Les Miserables.
@CampyKelsey
My list would've almost been the same as you except I felt like some other non-Sondheim shows should be given a shot. AW YEAH LES MIS. AND INTO THE WOODS.
