+182 It's incredibly pretentious that the US has nick-named their own president "The leader of the free world", amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Because Obama is a huge fan of freedom! What with his penalty "fees" and all out assault on some of the most basic rights the constitution grants us such as free speech and due process, and all the new regulations, laws, taxes, etc

by Anonymous 11 years ago

He's not assaulting any right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How did he "all out assault" free speech and due process? Because whenever people say the Bill of Rights and assaulted I immediately think of something as huge as the PATRIOT Act. Also, all presidents assign new regulations, laws, and taxes. That's how we get change.

Serious question...why was he going around congress to get his way with all of his executive orders?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hes given himself the authority to detain any person, foreign or a citizen indefinitely without bail, a trial, or legal representation if they are even suspected of any terrorist activity. Constitutional? He has also passed laws that give him the ability to temporarily detain anyone for certain spoken infringements. And @Jojo, yeah it happens but you have to remember that's also how nations become socialized. It's not a good thing. Whether you think government control is better than leaving things to the people is a different argument for a different day, but Obama is so far gone to the former that it's hard to believe that anyone who knows what's up can claim for him to be a "champion of freedom"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Anon, it's to accomplish his own agenda and return election favors, and he truly believes (I think?) that he knows better than everybody else so he shouldn't have to factor those lesser opinions in

Danny, I don't think it was Obama's plan (in reference to indefinite detainment for suspected terrorists). I think he just signed off on it. I can't remember the name of the law that you're referencing, but I believe Obama vowed never to use it, and just signed it for appeasement reasons, or something. I'm sure if you look into it you'll find OBama's statements on the subject. I'll try to get some sources to you

Well, at one point we were the entire free world were we not?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, but that point has passed.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Sorry, could you explain how the US was the entire free world? Like the only free country or what?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Care to elaborate the point in which you were the entire free world? I just can't seem to recall it.

I'm sorry, how does North American independence render the whole world, except them, 'not free' ?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So britain was what? A freedomless dictatorship until America invented freedom in 1776? Not gonna lie you're portraying some serious American ignorance

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No, but it was an [oftentimes] oppressive monarchy with an uneven balance in power. They did not have anywhere near the religious or political freedoms that we had here. I may have dropped APUSH after 2 months, but I know my basics!

Britain has a constitutional monarchy. Which more or less is a democracy and as such it is widely recognized that while Athens is the birth of democracy Britain is the longest standing democratic country still in existence. Also, Britain was the first democracy in existence to give women the right to vote in 1918, before the US. Does that create the argument that Britain had true full democracy and the US followed suite after?

The only time I ever hear people call him that is during dramatic lines in movies. No one actually calls him that.
