+553 It's a weird moment when you realize a word isn't pronounced the way you always thought it was, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I had been pronouncing the word 'epitome' wrong for six years. I was so embarrassed when I found out.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My biggest one was irrevocably. That was a true aha moment.

Acoustic and atheist. I would say atheist as "ah-thee-ist." But, I still accidentally say acoustic as "a-cost-ic" sometimes.

I said "albeit" as ul-beet instead of all-bee-it until about seven months ago.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I thought it was "all bate" for the longest time. I feel your pain.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Apparently, I had been saying 'albeit' wrong too. I thought it was said like 'al-bite.'

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I guess I was saying it wrong too. Thought it was al-bay. Not sure why I assumed the t was silent.

Allegory. I've always pronounced "ah-LEG-ory"

asylum, malignant, naive, polish (as in nail polish) Niall, Louis....

So bad at pronunciation. Plethora, permanent, geronimo, renege, accompaniment, solider, iron, and pastor, among other words...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How did you say them?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ple-THOR-a, for geronimo and permanent I switch around the m's and n's when I say them (I still haven't corrected those), re-nedge like it rhymes with hedge, a- come-PAN-i-ment, solider like shoulder, i-ren, and pasture.

I used to pronounce meme like meme, but now I pronounce it meme.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I have a friend that pronounces it "mem" (like "member") and another that pronounces it "mi-mi". I corrected the second one because I was closer to her but I didn't have the heart to correct the first and it's close enough.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How is it pronounced?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not sure how to explain it. More like "meem", I guess? It rhymes with "beam".

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm really surprised I've been pronouncing it correctly!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, it does come from the French word, which IS pronounced "mem" so I can see how your friend would think that.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That makes sense, her step-dad is French.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I always thought plaid was pronounced like played rather than plad :(

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I pronounced mischievous wrong for the longest time.
