+213 You always press the cross the button many times when crossing at a light or you think it won't work, amirite?

Most of these buttons don't actually work. Traffic lights generally use either a timer or some sort of sensor. The buttons were disabled long ago, it was just cheaper to not remove them. People believe they work because whether or not you press it, the light will inadvertently change. Those who pressed it will get the idea that the button works reinforced.

Here if you don't press the button the light (obviously) still changes but the walk signal won't show up and if it's a light where the red light usually doesn't last very long you don't have enough time to cross.

I just came back from walking and one actually didn't work, the light was out. Sadly, running across that street was probably one of my scariest experiences. But then when we went to a side that did work, and it had the weirdest recorded messages, yelling at us to "Wait" every other second...
