+267 You think it makes a hotel look cheap when they charge for wifi, amirite?

It's funny because the only hotels that have charged me for wifi have always been upscale hotels and the shitty hotels always have free wifi. Moral of the story: always do shitty hotels. Good hotels aren't too clean, either.

3 days after I post this I'm browsing Cracked and see a debate over whether or not hotels should charge for wifi http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/debate-should-hotels-charge-wi-fi/

Hotels are in business to make money, plain and simple.

I'm going to elaborate more to justify why I think hotels charging for WiFi is okay. I work in a hotel as a front desk clerk, and the amount of money to maintain a hotel is unbelievable. The hotel I work in is an 88 room hotel, yet we go through $3,000 a week in food alone. Bedding is also a huge expense, two years ago we spent $20,000 to get new bedding for all of the rooms. In short, the revenue brought in from the Wi-Fi charge is beneficial to maintaining and updating the hotel. Anyway, I don't really know if anyone cares, but I just thought I'd share my opinion.

If you fully booked a month at $50 a night (which is cheap for a hotel) that would be over $130,000. I understand you have other, bigger expenses, like electricity, but is the wifi charge really necessary?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Necessary, no. Beneficial, extremely so. The hotel I work at (Best Western) doesn't charge for WiFi, and we still get along fine without the extra money.

I don't think they should. Its like charging for TV, or advertising "color TV". WIFI isn't a luxury anymore, it's become far too common and expected.

Normally, it's the nicer hotels that charge for wifi. They also normally don't have free breakfast because if people are staying there, they can usually afford to pay the extra pretty penny. In upscale hotels, people are looking for luxury and in mediocre hotels, people are looking for value.

I really wouldn't mind it if they would just post somewhere how much it costs so I can take that into account. would it really be that hard?
