+368 Gays should be able to get MARRIED, not something that is the "same" but called something different, EQUAL = EQUAL. Not "kinda equal", amirite?

THANK YOU. People don't understand that by doing so much as having it go by a different legal term, it's not true equality.

"Oh, I don't understand what's the big deal about gay marriage! Gays can be in a civil union and be just as happy, they don't need marriage to be happy!" Whoever uses this argument against gay marriage should be told they're only allowed to be in a civil union while all their friends can get married and see how they feel about it then. Discrimination is discrimination. "Gays don't //need// equal rights to be happy." Homophobe logic.

I just saw this as a comment.

Thats because Lamb_of_God commented the same thing on another gay marriage post before posting it themself hahah

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This is true, after I commented it, I thought it would make a good post; it is still an original thought from my mind. And no I am not gay myself, I just believe in treating ALL people equally.

Just because something isn't the same doesn't make it unequal. Four quarters isn't the same thing as a dollar but the value is still equal

We're not talking about MONEY were talking about PEOPLE. And if you had 4 quarters you would have the choice to exchange it for a dollar, gays wouldnt be able to exchange! And if it's the same thing then why not call it the same thing. They're saying it's NOT The same thing by calling it something else. I'd love to see what people would say if suddenly the government said only white people and light skinned people could get married and everyone else could only be in civil unions. Theyred be hell because nobody wants to be told that they can't be a part of something that everyone else in the country can be a part of because of something they had no choice in. It's discrimination no matter how you try to spin it.

Look, I'm not against gays and I'm in favor of equal rights. I'm not even talking about gay rights in my comment. I'm just saying that I don't agree with the statement "it's not the same thing by calling it something else." It's not the same thing because the protections and rights provided are not the same thing. In a civil union, you are protected at only a state level and not a federal one. You do not have the same federal legal protections. THAT is what makes them unequal, not the fact that they don't have the same name. Four quarters is a different form of a dollar but the value is the same, thus they are equal. A civil union is a different form of marriage but the value is NOT the same, thus they are unequal. If civil unions had the same legal protections and rights as marriage, then it would be equal no matter what the heck you called it.

If civil unions simply didn't exist and any couple could get married, regardless of sexuality, then this would be a much better country.

I fully and completely support gay people getting the same benefits, yet I understand that marriage is a religious concept, and because I believe in the separation of church and state, I don't have any problem with it not being called marriage
