+165 You don't like how this music these days is more about the tune or beat rather than the lyrics, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Depends. Sometimes lyrics have their place, but in my opinion, instruments are king.

I have a lot of instrumental songs. Personally, I think the beat or tune of a song carries a lot more emotion than lyrics possibly could.

Music wasn't always primarily about the lyrics. Mozart and Bach never wrote any lyrics. Their pieces were all about the tune.

fair point, but the post is more regarding the modern dubstep... i did say "music these days"

But not all, or even a majority, if today's music is dubstep. There is so much variety in music right now, and there are bound to be some types you don't like. But there are also tons of extremely lyrical songs out there. You just have to look outside the top 40

When I first hear a song, I take in the music. The lyrics are usually just another instrument to me and I could care less what their "message" is. After time passes (could be a month or year), I go back to the song and analyze the lyrics and what they mean to me.

It's like the movie, "Music and Lyrics". I found the right quote: "Alex Fletcher: It doesn't have to be perfect. Just spit it out. They're just lyrics. Sophie Fisher: "Just lyrics"? Alex Fletcher: Lyrics are important. They're just not as important as melody. Sophie Fisher: I really don't think you get it. Alex Fletcher: Oh. You look angry. Click your pen. Sophie Fisher: A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. Sex. Alex Fletcher: I so get that. Sophie Fisher: But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two that makes it magical. "

@OhEmGee_Muffin: I love that movie!

It's sad and disturbing to see 10 year old girls dancing to an upbeat song but the lyrics are about sex.

I mean, I do notice and love when a song has really beautiful lyrics. But I listen to music for the MUSIC, generally. Good lyrics are appreciated but they're more of an added bonus.

Music these days tends to not even have a tune, just a "beat" to whore yourself out to, which I hate. I hate the lyrics too.

We must be listenig to some drastically different music.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I personally think the melody is the most important part of a song. All songs have a melody, while not all songs even have lyrics. But I do agree that songs today need more meaningful lyrics.

If you don't like "music these days" then listen to other music besides pop. There's a ton of other, better bands out there and I can name a ton that are more about the lyrics if you really want that.

Something that hasn't been mentioned: Part of the reason I like lyrics so much is that it's great just to listen to someone with an great voice. Hearing someone nail a high note perfectly is an amazing thing to listen to. An even better way to just focus on the voice is to find someone with an awesome voice who sings in a different language. I can't understand a word of what people like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban say in some of their songs, but it lets me focus on their voices. I also like lyrics because I'm a sucker for harmonies.

Just how music has always been since its origin?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

it's evident how every generation hates the music of the generation after, because they feel it's lost meaning. That is not always the case. if you look at people from the 70's or 60's, i'm sure you'll find some that hated 80's rock when it came around, but now we consider them classics. it's useless to fight music as it comes

I couldnt care less about the lyrics if the music sounds terrible.

I'd much prefer a good melody to good lyrics. Just look at the Beatles. Great melodies, but what the fuck are they on about? One of my favorite songs of theirs is Why Don't We Do It In The Road. Grand total of 13 different words, but it's so damn catchy.
