-293 I shouldn't be forced to learn about evolution in school if it goes against my religious beliefs, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You should learn about all the beliefs out there no matter what you believe.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's nothing wrong with learning a different viewpoint, especially when that viewpoint is now a proven fact.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Sorry, but how is it proven? I believe in the evolution theory, but I was pretty sure it's still a theory

by Anonymous 11 years ago

In science, the term "theory" means "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment." Keyword: facts

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That still makes the evolution theory a theory, doesn't it? Based on facts, but not a real fact itself

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But it's not a theory in the potential sense you're thinking of. In the world of science, it's impossible to determine something to be a 100% truth, since the idea of science is a scientific theory itself. When it comes to science, a scientific theory is as good as the truth.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No. That's why we have laws. If it was proven to be true it would be The Law of Evolution. Not the theory.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Just because something is a theory, doesn't mean it's automatically false. Do you know about Cell Theory, the theory that cells reproduce from cells? How about Kinetic Theory? It's the theory that gas is just a bunch of particles that are in constant motion. A theory can be seen, repeated, and seen again. That's why evolution is a theory, we can see the subtle difference that lead to all living things today. People need to realize the word theory is not a synonym to assumption.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I never said it was. But, it is closer to fact than fiction since there is a lot of evidence in favor of evolution.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We're not saying it's a fact either. But to deny a theory purely on the base of a religion is ignorant.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ignorance? To me, ignorance is rejecting something that is widely regarded to be true on the basis of religious beliefs. And if you can propose a valid argument against evolution, your Nobel prize should be arriving in the mail shortly.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@Master J. If I was ignorant, I would say evolution is a fact. I'm saying it's a highly credit theory on the origin of humans. I know it's subject to change and can be disputed. But to say evolution is false, because your religion goes against it, is ignorant. You're ignoring the evidence without even examining it. @Sobriquet. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/evolution/7550033/Missing-link-between-man-and-apes-found.html While this link between humans and primates may not prove evolution, it enforces it. How can you say evolution hasn't been validated already? We find new evidence every year that enforces evolution. That's the beautiful thing about science, it's subject to change when new evidence arrives. That's why evolution, cells, and gas are all theories, they can change. Cell theory and gas theory are widely accepted, why isn't evolution?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh, I thought you were all Christian butthurt. Disregard what I said.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This conversation evolved into something so off topic to the matter at hand. Not only that, but this is a website where you share your opinion. If you are not able to accept the fact that people's opinions will differ from yours and you cannot change that, then get off.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Almost. I wasn't stating my position on the original post at all, even though I do not agree with it, but I was just saying that the point of the original post was whether or not the person should be forced to learn about evolution based on their beliefs, not what evolution is or if the theory is correct. But, agreeing with the above statement, the argument about the post itself is unimportant and pointless.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

and Sobriquet, you said yourself: I'm not getting into an argument over whether or not evolution is true or not; that is pointless.... so, you just got yourself into a pointless argument. But that's okay.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

And I see yours. That's what this site is for! (;

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You aren't being forced... you can always just go to another institution to learn.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Even if you don't believe it, in most world history classes you are "forced" to learn about te major religions.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I shouldn't be forced to listen to religious people bitch about evolution being taught during class either, but i put up with it. Get the fuck over yourself.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The way you worded this was kinda harsh, but I do agree 100%.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No body is forcing you to listen to any one.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, no one forces you, but if people complain where you are present it still effects you.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The whole thing is being able to learn about and respect other viewpoints different from your own; you don't have to believe in those viewpoints.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

As long as you're not being indoctrinated there should be no problem. If it really makes you uncomfortable for religious reasons, though, you do have a right to sit out and should not be forced.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Trolololol.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

As most people above have said, there isn't any harm in learning about it. Also, I think it could set a bad precedent if they allow you not to learn about evolution because it could lead to others pretending to have a religious belief against something just because they don't want to learn it because it is hard.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you look to the left, you can see that God_the_Almighty disagrees with this post. So that's that then.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The thing that bugs me is that the exact opposite would get very up voted. An atheist in a catholic school who says it's against their belief to do religion, even if it's mandatory in a catholic schools and he chose to be in a catholic school, will get the entire Amirite community's support and no one will tell him 'it never hurts to learn more of other beliefs'. But this post gets trashed, it's a double standard

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I feel like you both VERY much so missed johns point.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@anon Yes you're correct, thanks for the pointless comment, but I don't think either of them will no matter what

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think people should learn about many types of religions and their beliefs if only to understand and be more thoughtful when dealing with others. However, evolution or creationism shouldn't be forced onto anyone as 'THE truth', but maybe presented as 'this is what some people believe'. At least in public schools...at religious schools they can teach whatever they believe.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

In my Catholic High School we did learn about evolution. We were taught about Darwin and such.. Still, we weren't forced to accept it, but it was there.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm an atheist at a Catholic school. Your agrument is invalid. Learning the science of evolution even if you don't believe in it will be a lot more useful to you than memorizing the seven gifts of the holy spirit, apostles' names, or holy days if obligation will do for me.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Just keep an open mind, bro. The universe is so big and complex that we haven't even scratched the surface of what's our there. Anything is (or was?) possible.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My extensive knowledge of the Bible, its writers, and its origins is precisely the reason I don't believe in it. Choosing to remain ignorant about things like evolution is the reason you still don't accept it. It is better to have knowledge of a wide variety of things even if you don't believe in it than to remain ignorant and in the dark, which is never good for you.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You better learn some real facts. the bible is corrupted crazy blah blah blah
