That's because the spells in Harry Potter have their roots in Latin, as does Spanish.

But they sound more like Latin. However, I find it ironic that JK uses "Cave inimicum" as a spells for warning the spell casters of enemies when it translates almost quite literally as "warn the enemies." funny things like that make me laugh :)

Mike, they sound 'more like latin', because they are literally latin. Everything is in literal latin.
But things in spanish sound closer than other latin-based 'romance languages'.

I didn't say the words were Latin, I said they have their root in Latin; meaning they are only roughly based on Latin words, similar but not identical. Much like most scientific terms in English.

Hmm, maybe because Spanish is a romance language and the Harry Potter spells are (almost all) Latin - the origin of all romance languages...

Thats because Spanish and Italian are still rather similar to original Latin. French, while similar, is much more different due to greater Germanic Influences.

since google translate doesn't pick up on slang, that means "oh my god, that whore just got a boner!" (thanks to the spanish person from CR that taught me that!)
