+188 You think that America should switch to a popular vote method during elections instead of the electoral vote method they have now, amirite?

When you say electoral college, it reminds me of that song on schoolhouse rock

Do you want a penguin for president? Cause that's what's gonna happen...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes I do.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I thought that that won't work because the smaller states don't have equal power or something. Dear POTD, I USED IT TWICE IN A ROW. SUCK IT!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They don't really have it now.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually, with the Electoral College, some small states have more power than they deserve.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How so?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Electoral votes aren't divided evenly among the states based by population. Every state gets 3 votes automatically even though some states like Rhode Island don't have a large enough population to justify 3 votes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wC42HgLA4k

But under this system, you wouldn't be voting by state, it'd be by popular vote, so it wouldn't matter if some states had 'unequal power'.

Majority rules voting sucks too. See my below comment. http://amirite.net/728646/1758416

OH GOD YES. The Electoral College is so pointless.

CGP Grey will explain all. On his second point, yes, I know we already have two party system but keep watching because he goes beyond that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7tWHJfhiyo

Actually, this is part of a playlist on Youtube. I suggest watching the whole thing to see that Mixed Member Proportional is the best method.

darn liberals

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Exactly! But I didn't wanna call them that cuz it seems rude

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm kind of ignorant about this. What is even the point of having an electoral college?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The point was so that the small states don't get looked over and candidates pay them as much attention as the big states, even though this a democracy and it doesn't matter jack shit what the states think. It's what the people think. And the electoral college sucks at doug this because in the last two months of the last presidential campaign, a majority if the candidates' time and money was spent in just 4 states.
