+23 marriage is totally overrated...having a legal piece of paper doesn't determine how much you love someone, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No, a piece of paper does not determine how much you love someone. But it's more than just a piece of paper. It is a lifelong commitment to be with the one you love no matter what happens.

yes i know... but what im saying is that you don't have to have a stupid piece of paper and the same last name to be with and love someone for the rest of your life :)

No, you definitely do not have to. But that still doesn't mean that marriage is overrated.

Of course you don't //have// too. But a symbolic item and ceromony aren't overrated ways to your life long commitment to someone.

COMMITMENT is a lifelong commitment to your partner. Marriage is just a tradition. You can have one without the other - that's why there's divorce.

Yes, you certainly can. You do not have to be married in order to be with someone for the rest of your life, or to love them. All I'm saying is that marriage is more than just a piece of paper. Obviously you do not have to be married though in order to love someone and be committed to them.

Sure, if you only think of it in those terms. But if your commitment isn't officially recognized by the government, it can complicate things.

If you mean the actual ceremony, I think it's a symbol of your everlasting love for that person. It's a lavish gesture.

But it does determine if you get to visit your spouse in the hospital, and gives you a number of benefits pertaining to taxes, medical care, property ownership, etc.

I agreed with the OP because I see what it's getting at - but at the same time there are numerous other tangible reasons to get married, and several seem to be mentioned above - it's a legal status issue, as well as the symbol of commitment to the person you love. Anyway, OP is right in that way, and a lot of people marry without really knowing what they're doing it for.
