+169 We idolize/look up to the wrong people (ex: celebrities), when we should be looking up to our Nation's Heroes (fireman, soldiers, doctors, policemen, etc.), amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

whoever we want to look up to is the "right person." doctors can make mistakes just like celebrities. of course, they are doing something far more beneficial for the human race. it all depends on why you idealize someone and how that person matches up to your personal values.

that's different. it would make a lot more sense to pay our "national heroes" more. people dont become celebrities that easy. it takes a lot of time and work (usually) to get into hollywood and the schedules are quite demanding. if you're a decent actor. im not saying anything about shitty ones in soap operas and disney.

I thoroughly agree with this post, however the comment above me seems to have the idea, people make mistakes "only human" just means everyone is the same, Famous or not people murder, cheat, break the law in many ways, end of the day look up to yourself and be who you want to be, do what you know is right and you can only let yourself down.

Your punctuation might give me a heart attack.

I do apologise, Genuinely was a little zoned out when I typed it.

Haha it's fine. The message is good so it made up for it

i think that people such as soldiers and police officers should get more appreciation although i dont think we should decide who people idolize.

I think the problem of who we look up to is based on who we are exposed to the most often. We see celebrities every day on TV but Firefighters and Police officers are only seen if there's an emergency.

yeah when you said "celebrities", i immediately was thinking of jersey shore rats, parios hilton etc. These people have done nothing and get so much of our attention. Screw them

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The least people could do is to stop hating police officers. I don't think I've ever heard the word "cop" without it being preceded by an insult. Yeah, you got a ticket, you were breaking the law. Cops are just trying to do their jobs and keep everyone safe, but most people just HATE them for it.

I agree, but it's the minority of bent cops that is causing the problem. Media will not play up the good cops and what they are doing, but they love a story about a bent one who takes kickbacks and gives people shit for doing absolutely nothing wrong. It sucks, but IMO, that's the reason "cop" has such negative connotations to so many people

I've had too many bad experiences with cops not to dislike them at least a little bit. I do respect the ones that actually do their job properly and don't stalk you on the highway because they think you'll suddenly start speeding.

I guess your role model would be someone you want to be like when you grow up. If you want to be a great actor, you might look up to Will Smith. If you want to be a hero, you might look up to the NYFD.

I disagree that the people you listed are actually heroes (except perhaps soldiers). They're just doing their job.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

true, but anyone who signs up for a job which takes over so much of your life, and requires so much sacrifice on your part deserves to be dubbed a hero...at least that's what i think
