Buddhism is the only universalizing religion in which it is acceptable to follow another religion at the same time.

Well... I agree with the reasoning but it is not the only one. Both Jainism and Hinduism have or have had the same position on other religious tradition. On the other hand, there are factions within all three of them that are very militant.

Buddhism isn't so much a religion as a philosophical viewpoint on things, which is why some people can be both buddhist and a different religion.

It's because buddhism does not follow the command of a specific deity, but rather a physical, enlightened human being. This is actually a tangible concept to people.
