+211 It's strange that Australia is almost the same size as the mainland United States, yet is only divided into 8 states compared to 48, amirite?

It might be the way we established our states through manifest destiny. I'm not sure how it worked in Australia. Our settlers at first were English and they named their states to pay homage to England. Then when we were free there were fights/negotiations with the Natives and Mexicans for land. Then there was a rule that if your settlement reached I think 60,000 people you could apply for statehood. That's really oversimplified, but I hope it makes sense.

There's a lot less people here. It would be a bit pointless to add more states. Most of our population lives around the edge of Australia as well.
