+118 We should not have absolute gender equality, but functional gender equality. For example, the mother should still have an advantage fighting for custody of children, and urinals should not be outlawed (that last one is not an actual feminist argument, just an example) amirite?

If you're wondering, it's because maternal instinct is pretty good for the kid. Also, guys hitting girls should be frowned upon, as should hitting guys in the balls. This includes applications for the military. Both men and women should be held to the same standards, because only the raw test scores determine how proficient in combat you will be, not if you 'were good for a girl'. Sports events should be separate because differing anatomy makes girls better at certain events and guys better at others.

I agree completely. I'm a woman and it annoys me when women say they can do everything as good as a man. No, you can't. That's the beauty of 2 genders, is the differences. USUALLY men are better at sports, science, math, mechanics, they are more muscular, stronger, whereas women are USUALLY better at taking care of children, English, art, sewing, they are more compassionate and better at multitasking. There is nothing wrong with this; complete gender equality would mean one gender.

I mostly agree, but I think the English, art, maths and science bits should be specified to have less of a difference than the others.

WOMEN: We're all good at English, regardless of what language we speak, art- which is a totally subjective thing, and sewing- not crafts in general, but sewing very specifically. Our vaginas in addition to our very unique 'sewing hormones' give us our skill with a needle and thread. And the majority of what you just said is //totally// based on scientific evidence rather than misconceptions and thousands of years of stereotyping and enforced gender roles.

Chivalry when you need it, sexism when you don't. It seems a lot of Feminists are quick to point out how men are inferior. There is no equality unless both parties are equal, if you think men are slighlty inferior to women then stop calling yourself a feminist and just come right out and say sexist.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Truth. True feminism is about genuine equality for both genders. If you imply that one gender is superior to the other then you pretty much broke the first rule of feminism and you're just a hypocrite.

I could not disagree more. First of all you're making up a point that doesn't even have any value at all how does that make any sense? Also, why should the mother get the advantage in custody battles? My uncle lost custody to his ex even though she was a drug addict and criminal. How is that fair? It's not like he was so much worse. He wasn't perfect obviously but I would bet any money he's the better parent. Child laws are completely unfair in some cases how can you compare that to an argument you made up yourself?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I meant she gets an advantage when all other thugs are equal. What happened to your uncle is bullshit an i hope it's a more or less isolated incident. I couldn't use an actual feminist argument because that would sound like in generalizing the extremists. Real feminists have perfectly reasonable arguments.

Okay maybe if all things are equal it should go to the woman, but I'm willing to bet it's extremely rare for two people to be exactly equally qualified to raise a child. In nearly every case one parent is better suited to raising the children and it is very possible that it's the father.

I think it's like electric charges. A charged object will attract even a neutral object because the attracted region is closer than the repelled region, making the net force one of attraction. The neutral object must gain a certain amount of like charge to be repelled. In a similar way, there is some allowance so the father must be a bit better than the mother to overcome the maternal instinct thing

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's plenty of evidence that children that grow up in fatherless homes are more likely to have problems, but I'm not sure what the statistics are for motherless homes.

I'm completely uninformed on this, but I think a possible reason is that it's easier for a girl to learn 'girl stuff' form people other than the mother, but sons can only get the full experience of 'guy stuff' from the father...? I can't say for sure because I've never experienced being a girl. But for both sons and daughters, maternal instinct makes for a better parent all things being equal.

I think both parents need to be involved in a child's life in order for them to develop completely "normally." However, I'm somewhat interested in researching this and seeing what the statistics are for single mothers versus single fathers. I'd think that they would be about the same, but it's impossible to tell at the moment.

I think assuming that every women has this maternal instinct and because of it is going to want to have children and be able to take care of them better is pretty problematic. If the mother isnt suited to have custody and the father is more suited there shouldnt be an advantage for the women because of this maternal instinct youre talking about.

I'm not dealing in absolutes here. I'm just saying she should have an advantage, not a guaranteed win.
