It's one thing to forfeit medical care. That I can agree with. It's another thing to actively try to end your life which I don't agree with; especially if it involves asking anyone (namely a doctor) for assistance in doing it

Pain killers aren't magic. There's going to be pain even with being on pain killers 24/7. If an old person in pain on the brink of death wants to end it already, I don't see why someone needs to care about it as much to say they're against it.

Maybe because there's value to all life. That's kinda crappy of you to say that nobody should even care. And I don't even remember mentioning pain killers. In fact, I don't even remember discussing a specific medical problem meaning that we really have no reference here on what could be done to solve the problem other than general medical care v suicide.

I just meant the patient decides, and beyond that is none of my business and I should not care. I wouldn't care about their //decision//, but obviously I would about their death.

Again, given the fact that there is no specified problem here and no treatment other than "medical care" there are other ways to cure pain. Like I said, there is value to all life and I don't believe I should ever be thrown away but especially if the person is not capable of doing it on their own.

OP here. In case anyone is wondering, this came to me when my grandpa was telling me about his acquaintance, who we shall call Robert. Robert, who has already lost his wife, siblings, and several close friends, just lost his best friend. He's nearing 90 and has has decided to stop taking his medications because he is ready to move on. His children, however, are trying to force him into psychiatric care, where they will force him to take his medicine and prolong his life.

This makes me sad... my father in law did the same thing right before he passed away & the doctors did everything put pretty much shove the pills in his mouth & keep his mouth closed until he swallowed to keep him medicated. He just wanted to go...

In theory, yes totally. In practice, however, when you take into account loved ones that want to keep you alive, things are much more complicated... there's a pretty big gray area.

I feel as if what you're saying is true, and loved ones might play a role in wanting to keep the elderly alive, but, as OP said in an earlier comment, I think it's a little wrong of them to try and force psychiatric care on him when clearly he no longer has the will to live. I mean, can you imagine living for 90+ years, going though great tragedies and discoveries, having experienced life, losing all of your friends and parents, being unable to care for yourself, then having your own //children// forcing you to take medications just because they want you to live when you believe your time if finally over? I think what the OP is trying to say is it's not exactly a "right" that they have earned, but it's the fact that they have lived their own life and ultimately deserve to make their own decision, regardless of what the others think. (You probably didn't ask for that, but I still felt the need to interject my opinion. )

I saw a movie about this in school. The guy was quadriplegic and had been for 20 years. He eventually had to live in the hospital so they can keep him alive. He lived in Spain and had to fight for the right to end his life. In the end he drank some poison and died.

I just spent a good fifteen minutes trying to find the post like this that I commented on saying something like, "I wrote a paper on this once. It was an interesting topic to dig deeper on" and then someone responded saying they argued for enthuasia and their teacher said they don't value life or something like that. I think that at that age they have a right to end their own life. But I would think that someone who's like, 12 and having a bunch of hormonal problems shouldn't be allowed to do that. An elderly person has went through a lot in life, seen a lot, loved a lot, ect. so they know what they're giving up. The only caution that I would put in this kind of thing is that you must go to some psychiatric help for a little bit or talk to all your family members before the medical assistants help you end your life. Just something to show them reality and that there's a silver lining so they can be stopped if it's just a phase or something but still being able to have that decision.

The problem comes when you have dementia and alzheimer's patients. They're usually unable to live alone even while they're on medication. Once they stop taking their medication then they will quickly become confused/afraid/miserable. It is hard to watch someone with dementia while they're having a really bad day, it's extremely sad and pitiful. Even if they do think they want to go through with it, they won't die quickly. It will take months and possibly years of this horrible quality of life. No one really wants to go through with that.

Well, Alzheimer's and dementia medications aren't the type that will kill you if you don't take them. If one of those patients doesn't take that medication, it's not a death wish, I don't think. I still think the person has the right to choose whether or not they want to affect their mind like that. If you want to live a horrible life, who's to stop you from making that choice?

I volunteer at a memory care nursing home where all the patients have either Alzheimer's or dementia. To me, unless they are very early on in the disease, they would not have the mental capacities to decide whether they should end their life or even cut back on medications. It would have to be a loved one to decide for them or just leave things how they are.
