+53 Marriage is a union between two people that love each other, and this is taken for granted in society. It's really depressing that about one half of all marriages end in a heart-breaking divorce. Humans are naturally monogamous creatures, so marriage is a life-long commitment. It should always stay that way, amirite?

Humans, like virtually all other species, are naturally polygamous/polygynous.

I was coming in here just to say that. Thank you.

Humans are not naturally monogamous... 1 in 2 is actually a pretty good chance to make it, put those odds for cancer or gambling. Also, being monogamous means you have one mate, not that you have a life long commitment. It makes no sense to say that since humans are monogamous (even though we're not) so marriage should be life long.

Yes, but we only became monogamous some time after turning into homo sapiens. And you could look at it as half of all marriages really last the rest of your life.

I don't get why people always care so much about divorce rates. Work on //your// marriage, or the marriages of the ones you love. If you truly love your partner, whether the divorce rate is 1% or 99% would not change a thing. Divorce isn't that horrifying or scandalous or even depressing. People change and separate and move on. If they feel they are truly incompatible, forcing them to stay together would be completely vicious.

Those people are trying to uphold the dignity of marriage, and also to help people understand the commitment involved in marriage so they don't end up having to get a divorce.

That's fine, and a good thing. I could understand being a little bit upset about how less people stay in marriages, but complaining about divorce rates isn't upholding dignity for anything. If that's the justification for someone trying to help others, then my statement doesn't apply. It's just annoying when people think the 50% divorce rate means marriage has been destroyed, when people are divorcing for personal reasons, not so they can try and destroy marriage.

At the same time, some people are just divorcing because they didn't get to know their partner well enough. A couple's marriage is almost doomed to fail if they get married after 6 months of dating.

The other half end in death. I think divorce is better than death.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Literally everything ends in death. Even if you get divorced you will die. That's probably the worst argument I have ever heard, unless you are implying that you will die sooner if you are married.

I think she was making a joke and you took it seriously.

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure when I posted that... oh well, I guess it's up for interpretation.

I dont really believe in marriage in the first place.. if two people love each other putting on a show shouldn't be necessary.
