No it's not. Watching those shows was an important part of their childhood. It was something they shared with most other kids of their time. That doesn't make it sad at all.

Watching TV is technically //doing// something. Therefore, it is something they //did//. But I agreed because sometimes that is all they talk about. I was a 90's kid and spent most of my days on my bike. I didn't even get to watch most of the shows people talk about because we didn't have satellite.

Yeah I don't think it's fair to say it like this, OP. Children are a product of their era, and TV and remains an important part of our time. TV shows help teach kids things, and can help them develop their personalities. If they had the same TV back in the 40s, they'd probably be saying the same thing! You can't judge it as inferior or "scary". It's just the way it is. The next generation will probably yarn on about the iPad apps they downloaded

Why does it matter what their childhood was like if it turned them into the person they are today? Tv shows and all, if hours of tv and the internet molded me into the person who stands before you, then will I keep all my "wasted" hours, thank you.

You put the word "wasted" in quotes, but I honestly think that if your fondest memories are of things that didn't really happen, those hours //are// wasted. Sure, I watch TV. I have plenty of favorite shows, but I don't let them define my life. I hate that our generation is the one that lets media be the most important part of growing up. And honestly, I would not feel comfortable living in a world run by adults who say that TV shows made them who they are.

I've had a friend specifically say to me that if I've never owned a Gamecube, Playstation or Xbox, I had no childhood. I've owned a NES and a Wii in the past, but those two systems don't count, apparently.

Not really. Cartoons were watched by most children. It was easy to talk to children about them. It would be awkward for those nostalgic people online to go "Like for that time in 1992 where me and pete found that abandoned house filled with dust"

What I have to say is directly related to the very thing you said. If you would like me any more explicitly state that I wasn't getting at you in particular, then that's fine by me. I work in advertising, I'm used to adding disclaimers to things. no, 90s kids all have something in common no other generation did: 90's children's shows. same with 70's kids, 80's kids, etc. Doing things like playing outside is something all generations did. "lms if you used to play hide and seek all the time lol true 90's kid ;D ;D" just doesn't have the same annoying ring to it.

I like to look back and remember everything about my childhood, and that includes the TV shows I watched, and those were pretty well universal for children growing up in 90s, whereas my other experiences were not. If I shared everything I did as a child with people on the internet, a lot of it wouldn't even make sense because it was unique to me and my friends or family. I know my brother, my nephew, and I used to do all kinds of stupid things as kids that didn't involve TV, but it just wouldn't be interesting to all of you. I do reflect on it with them all the time, though.

Lots of 90's watched similar TV shows, right? Lots of 90's kids were also very active, I think it's safe to say. But when you're having a conversation with another kid, you can only say so much about what you did outside that day without it getting redundant, whereas TV shows are constantly changing.

As a 90'schildTM, I definitely understand why people refer to TV shows & such to define the childhood. I wouldn't go as far as to say "you didn't have a childhood if you didn't watch ______," but thinking back to my childhood, I remember waking up early to play Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, watch cartoons, etc. I also think about playing outside and having a life, but these shows & video games entertained me soooso much and therefore made me a happy child, so I do refer to them. Ya know?
