+166 It's frustrating how there can be Gay Pride parades and Black History month, but if there was a Straight Pride parade or White History month, people would freak out, amirite?

It's frustrating that Gay Pride parades and Black History month exist. They should just have, "Everybody is equal year."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

And it should happen annually.

I'm pretty sure no one has ever been told 'it's a sin to be straight!' or 'I'm better than you because you're black and I'm white.' Gay people and black people have dealt with prejudices, discrimination, and a lot of hate that most white or straight people haven't had to experience. Those parades and and Black History Month are basically saying 'even though I and people like me have been put down and looked down upon for years, I realize that it's ok that I am what I am, and I'm going to celebrate it.' And I realize that the ideal would be to not need to have a gay pride or Puerto Rican day parade, or black history, Jewish history, or Hispanic history months. But thats the way it is now, and it's probably not going to change anytime soon.

Actually, more recently, white people have been given the boot from other minorities.

I came here to say what Adonis said, but now that he's said it I'm just commenting to say "I know that too and you won't look at who thumbed up his comment so yeah aren't I sweet"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@AdonisBatheus Could you elaborate?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Exactly. When you have a Straight Pride or a White pride thing going on, it just suggests that people think straights/whites deserve more, because that's what the Gay Pride and Black Pride things are for.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually, over the summer, I was working for a non profit, and one of the kids I was working with looked at me and asked, "why do you care? You're white." and I just kind of looked at him, and all he said was "everyone knows whites are stuck up bitches." And my next door neighbor had a Romney sign in his yard; a man asked him to take it down because it was racist, because if my neighbor wasn't voting for a black man, he had to be racist. And I know, I know that whites and straights have done inexcusable things in the name of supremacy; there are unbelievable acts of indecency that nobody should have to go through. But at the end of the day, racism goes both ways... and at the end of the day, we're a majority minority nation.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"At the end of the day, we're a majority minority nation." When you say that, are you saying that there are more 'minorities' i.e. 'people of color' in America than there are white people?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not saying there isn't reverse racism/prejudice against whites and/or heterosexuals- I'm just saying it's never been systematic- minorities of all sorts (not just racially) are regularly targeted socially, economically, politically, and in the media. Both blacks and homosexuals specifically have had very extreme histories in terms of how they were treated in American society- to the point where it was at one point acceptable to kill them solely based on that one attribute. Even now, in 2012, our half-black president has to regularly defend himself against all kinds of accusations concerning his cultural background from political and media figures. And homosexuals still cannot have legal marriages in most states, have trouble with adoption, and are regularly censored/silenced in various social/professional settings. When it comes to homosexuality, a frightening amount of people believe it's a mental illness, or support ideas like 'praying the gay away', 'curing gays', gay exorcisms, etc. Nothing near this caliber can be said for whites/heteros- a handful of people being idiots towards white people is not the equivalent of systematic oppression.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

White history month: Yes we ravished your nation, yes we colonized Africa, and we're damn proud!!!!!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I hate that. I didn't do any of those things; my ancestors did. I shouldn't have to apologize for being born white.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

joke/jōk/ Noun: A thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, esp. a story with a funny punchline.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I know, I wasn't talking to you specifically. Sorry if I came off that way. I got the joke, but just saw it as an opportunity to say what I'd been thinking.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's because minority groups are known for rising against oppression, whereas the majority group nearly always causes the oppression.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe it was just me, but most of my history education could be described as "White History". I don't really want a month of it when most of it is already about that topic.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Exactly! The only "black history" i've ever learned in the classroom is generally the black rights movement and that is a small portion of what we ever learn in history. And straight pride is all around us anyway, I have never heard a parent tell their kid "You'd better not be straight." I mean I don't go to gay pride events, but I don't see why people are complaining. I actually see gay pride events similar to the black rights marches. (To an extent)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This doesn't bother me that much, but I find it very annoying that scholarships exist that only give money to, say, the black community. Other scholarships such as the National Merit Scholarship give the money to has earned it, regardless of race, gender, or any other factor like that. And yet, because I'm white, I can't qualify for another scholarship, even though I may be more qualified than many of the other people that do qualify for it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

People wouldn't freak out. They'd just think it was stupid as fuck. If you want to start a straight pride campaign or propose a white history month to your state government or something, go ahead. You have all the freedom to. Just prepare to get made fun of.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh my lord. White people and straight people are not oppressed. We learn A LOT about white history is school. For example, AP classes. AP World history or AP European history. No AP African history. No AP Latino history. No AP Asian history. Straight pride? What? I'm free to tell anyone I'm straight without fear of being shunned or kicked out. One or two bad experiences with the oh so scary colored people does not constitute oppression. Most scholarships end up going to white kids anyway, yes, there are a few scholarships that end up going specifically to POC. And it angers me when people say "I knew I would have gotten that scholarship over that stupid minority kid! wahh!" How the fuck do you know? You're not automatically smarter because you're white. You know what? How come a Latino/black person can't be successful without having someone saying "IT'S ONLY CUZ OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!11111 YOU ONLY GOT ACCEPTED INTO COLLEGE CUZ UR A COLORED PERSON AND U GOT PICKED OVER A DECENT,HONEST WHITE CHILD!11 OPPRESSION!" Do you know how it feels like to be hardworking and smart, and ALWAYS have someone questioning whether you only got the job/got into college/other because you're a POC?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

When there's a "white pride" group it's normally something like the KKK
