+129 It is more socially accetpable to be a girl with masculine interests than to be a guy with feminine interests, amirite?

I feel like (at least where I live) it's more acceptable for a straight girl to be a tomboy, but it's more acceptable for a guy to be gay.

It's because girls like to feel protected and stuff like that, but guys need girls in other ways, and masculine characteristics like enjoying filling virtual images with virtual lead just adds to their awesomeness.

If it were socially acceptable to be a cheerleader as a guy I'd have done it in a heartbeat in high school. "What do you do for fun?" "I do flips and throw chicks 15 feet in the air. HOW YOU DOIN."

That was acceptable until the last sentence.

Not only are men shamed if they are more feminine, sometimes girls are shamed for having feminine interests as well. It's like "How can you wear makeup/be interested in fashion/be a housewife??" Because somehow people's interests make them somehow sexist or non-progressive. The problem isn't that some women WANT to wear makeup or have feminine jobs like nurses and stuff.. the problem is the EXPECTATION that all girls SHOULD want these things. And the problem is that feminine things are somehow "reserved" for only girls.

Feminine things are "reserved" for girls because we historically have less power in society than men do. So if a girl likes masculine things, it's perceived as having a benefit-- it helps their social standing by increasing their power in the public sphere. Conversely, if a boy likes feminine things, he is, in a way, lowering himself on the social ladder. And you're right about the problem being expectations, not desire. Despite the fact that I told him I wanted to go to grad school and make something of myself in the academic field, my ex indicated to me (in no uncertain terms) that he wanted me to quit working in a few years to raise a kid. (There are many reasons he is my EX, and this would be one of the bigger ones.)
