+81 Looking at today's media, it's clear mediocrity is celebrated, and being a true artist is viewed as over rated. amirite?

no. really, thats not true at all. If your untalented many people will tell you it. in fact thanks to youtube everyone can get limited exposure so you really have to stand out to "stand out". Sure there are people who should have been famous who aren't. However, the world has always worked liked that and sometimes the best artists aren't recognized until its too late, such as the director for citizen kane. a true artist can make a masterpiece or a mediocre display. both advance their respective medium as a whole, but, in different ways. Art is so intrinsic, if you pretend like you know what makes true art your pretentious as hell. All art truly is, is the stimulation of any part of a given persons senses and that someone isn't always going to be you. I mean I honestly don't appreciate Shakespeare, but i will never make the case that he wasn't an artist, because he was, his work is just not tailored towards me. Nor should it have been. Being a true artist isn't being a virtuoso. Art and talent aren't synonymous with each other.

Not sure what this post is saying. From the part about true artists being overrated, it might suggest that mainstream artists are automatically better than lesser-known artists (often not the case). To me, it seems as if you're implying that lesser-known artists are mediocre, but this is simply not how it works.

I might end up getting down-voted for this, but... If you're talking about today's media in terms of music, then I disagree. Some artists I like, such as Taylor Swift, may be regarded as mediocre, but that doesn't mean that I celebrate mediocrity. I celebrate her music because I personally DON'T find her mediocre. Music is a strictly aesthetic form of art for me, and while I have plenty of RESPECT for "true" artists who have meaningful lyrics, don't use auto tune, etc., nothing is going to make me listen to or enjoy their music if I don't like how it sounds. Furthermore, I don't think that "true" artists SHOULD be popular if they don't have aesthetic appeal. They shouldn't be easily accessible; they should be accessible to the people who care about them.
