+150 Given that billions of adults are hooked on some kind of drug, you wonder how society would change if no one had access to substances like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, etc, amirite?

sounds like it'd be pretty boring

The Beatles wouldn't exist (at least not their later stuff)

N-N-N-No coffee? shock

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well there could be coffee, but it would just be decaffeinated... UGH WHAT'S THE POINT OF THAT!?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I hear that some people like the taste of poop water.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Billions..? I dont know about that

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Don't doubt it for a second.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well there's only like 2-3 billion adults in the world alone, I dont think 66% or more of them are addicted to something. Especially since lots don't even have access to addictive substances.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

True. My mind works like an asshole and swapped "adults" with "people", since "adults" isn't vital to the post. Still, I think you'd be surprised. Obviously it's not indicative of the whole world, but I'd say that way over 66% of the adults I encounter daily are smokers. Tobacco is also used by non-developed cultures due to the fact that it's a plant that grows well in a myriad of climates.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You seriously shouldn't judge the world on the people around you. And I just honestly doubt 66% of the people in poor countries have access/(enough access to become addicted) to tobacco. Maybe a billion at the most.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"//Obviously it's not indicative of the whole world//" I don't. Tobacco companies are ruthless sons of bitches who will market to anyone they can. Uneducated members of third-world countries? You bet they'll jump all over that shit. Even if they're not selling it to them, it's a massively valuable cash crop. They'll grow it in whatever country they want, offer the people there jobs, and start marketing it to the locals. Enough access to become addicted? It's a plant, there aren't too many limitations on access to a plant, and nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man. More addictive than heroin. Speaking of heroin, we get (or used to get) the vast majority of our opium from Asia. If they're growing the poppy plants, what makes you think they're not using them? Same with South America and the coca plant. Addiction is everywhere.

2-3 billion? The median age in the world is 24 and there are 7 billion people, so I'm guessing there are at least 4 billion adults in the world. Of those, a big portion use caffeine on a daily basis, and alcohol on a regular basis.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Nope it doesn't work that way, there isn't an equal number of people of each age, I even looked up the stats. So, most people live at least one year, less people live 5 whole years, less people live 10 years, less people live up to 20 whole years, so overall there's just less adults than children in the world. I think that's pretty interesting actually.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Read my comment a little closer, lol. The *median* age is 24, meaning exactly 50% of people are 24 and older and exactly 50% are younger. And that's still completely in line with what you said.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Still, no, most people are kids it's not just half hmm

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well the average lifespan of people who live past age 5 is probably about 50 or 60. So if the median age is 24, that does demonstrate a bias towards younger people.

society would collapse. im saying this as a person without addictions.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I would be completely the fucking same.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm pretty sure socializing would become a lot different without alcohol. The workday would change without caffeine, and I'm also guessing sleep-related accidents would go up. I'm not saying the world would be flipped upside down, I'm just curious about the subtle changes that would occur.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Makes me glad I'm not addicted to anything. Well maybe a slight caffeine and sugar one due to the fact I drink Coke more than anything, then again there isn't that much caffeine in there.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not sure if everything would function the same without caffeine..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I sure as hell can't function the same without caffeine

by Anonymous 11 years ago

:P I haven't drank any coffee in at least a month
