You would prefer to go deaf rather than go blind, amirite?

But, my music. . . (cry2)
Besides, I'd finally be able to answer the question of whether or not blind people see anything while under the influence of psychedelics.

Music was my first thought too... I honestly don't think there would be a point in living without it.
I can't comment on the psychedelics though. >.>

I just don't like the idea that I would no longer be self sufficient.

But everything would be so lonely! It also depends on who you are, though. Music provides a massive amount of joy in my life. Maybe that's not true for other people.

out of interest, what if you could still hear music but nothing else? That's the way it is for some people, that's why there are deaf composers etc
by Anonymous11 years ago
Blind people are apparently more open and trusting than deaf people
I still would rather go deaf though, as otherwise I'd most likely have to give up almost all my hobbies (reading, doing art related stuff like drawing and sculpting)

Music is the only thing that makes me think twice about the decision but being deaf can be somewhat made up for by learning sign language and lip reading.

I think I'd go mad from the silence if I went deaf. Plus, music. And people's voices. I'd rather not be able to see someone I love than not be able to hear their voice, you know? But I could go both ways. Especially since I want to go into film/video/television production, and that's something you need both of those senses for.

It sucks for people born deaf, but for myself, I know how to read music, so I guess I could sort of supplement music that way. Like, if everybody else was obsessing over this one song that I couldn't hear, I would look up a score sheet for it and hum it to myself.
Still though, I love my vision too much.

I heard somewhere (BBC radio I think) they're closer to connecting sound detectors to hearing nerves that to making artificial eyes or repairing the optic nerve.

I can crochet deaf. I can't crochet blind.

I know this may sound really, really strange, but part of me really wishes that I could have been born deaf. It's hard for most people to understand, but as someone who is closely related to a deaf person and the deaf 'world', I know how amazingly peaceful and unified it is. I adore deaf culture, I think ASL is beautiful and I hate loud noises. I honestly don't think I would mind losing my hearing at this point.
My //sight//, on the other hand...

I think I'd rather be mute than anything else. That way I could still hear and see, but I would need to learn a new way of communicating.
by Anonymous11 years ago
But given the unfortunate choice of blindness or deafness which would you choose?
by Anonymous11 years ago
Probably being blind. Music has helped me through all the tough times. I also play music and it's a huge part of my life. I couldn't give that up.

I prefer movies to music. Subtitles.. I could get used to them.
