+163 It's insane that people actually get surgery to make themselves taller, amirite?

When I first read the post I thought it said surgary and I was "what does that mean? If you eat more sugar you get taller?"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, if purely for cosmetic reasons. Some people with extreme types of dwarfism end up getting surgery that I think slightly extends their legs, because society is probably difficult to function in for people so short. And the surgery only adds a couple inches. It's not insane, let people do what they can to make their lives a tiny bit easier.

It's more than just a couple inches, but yes I agree with you.

It took me a bit to find it; sort of related to your topic. This girl //really// wanted to be a flight attendant. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-138865/I-longed-air-hostess--I-legs-stretched.html

I think its actually been proven that taller men do better in business, they get more work and people take them more seriously. I wish I had a source...

I watched a documentary a few years ago about Chinese women getting that surgery because it made them feel better about themselves. It sounded really painful though.

Oops, that sounded negative, I think. I'm sorry. It was a documentary on how beauty is viewed in China and how many young girls/women like the western style (tall, big eyes, etc.) They showed people getting surgeries to make their eyes wider & also people getting surgeries to look taller. They also interviewed small girls who said they wanted to look like Barbie. All of them were pretty. They just didn't see that beauty in themselves.

I don't see how it's any more crazy than having surgery to suck out your fat or reconstruct your face...? I'm really unhappy with my height and I'd probably consider having it done if it was in my price range (unlikely) when I'm older.

Exactly what I was going to say. Just because it isn't as common doesn't mean it is any more "insane" than any other cosmetic surgery.
