I actually disagree with this quote. Yes, gossiping about other people is small-minded, but are you small minded every time you talk about your significant other, your children, someone that fascinates you, interesting interactions you observe between people, sociology, etc? No.

generally I think of gossip as speaking ill of someone and I think that's what the quote is referring to
