+100 Just because I don't believe in God does not mean that 1. I am an evil Satanist 2. I hate all Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. and 3. I don't/am not allowed to celebrate Christmas, amirite?

Come on, Voldy is allowed to have Christmas.

Why would you want to celebrate Christmas if you're not a Christian? You don't see non-Jews lighting candles on Hanukkah.

I think most people have Christmas just to have Christmas, or they do it for the whole family thing and don't put much or any religious stuff into it. My best friend and her mother are athiest and they always have christmas. Christmas just seems to be a thing to do, you know?

That's what I'm questioning. Why is Christmas 'a thing to do'? Other religions don't have their holidays and festivals secularized. Why are Christian holidays made out to be secular?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not quite sure what secular is. But I think that christmas is a big thing because a lot of people way back when were christian, they did it as the whole religious thing I guess. Then it eventually stopped being so much about god and Jesus and people still kept doing it because why not? I honestly don't understand the whole thing with Santa and the tree and everything. And actually, I think Christmas was originally a pagan thing adopted by Christians

I think it might have something to do with Christmas (in its earliest form) being a Pagan holiday

Exactly. Christmas eve- i go to my dad's family Christmas thing. Someone in the family rents out a church gym, we have dinner, pass out presents, play Dirty Santa, etc. Then Christmas my brother sister and I are with my mom and we open presents, eat, usually watch a movie. Nothing religious. My mom parents were never religious, so I was never influenced.

My mom started out as religious, but gave up on trying to get me and my sister invovled. I've never had a religious-y Christmas, or Easter.

What's dirty Santa?

OH MY GOD. The way my family plays: Everyone brings a wrapped/bagged present, not meant for anyone. We all put it on a table in the middle of a cirlce. Everyone draws a number, and we all go in numerical order. Whoever drew 1 picks a present first, whoever drew 2 goes second, and so on. You go to your spot, and open it. Usually it's something like a coffee maker box, which get's someone's hopes up. When they open it, it's a completely different item. You only pick a present once. But you CAN steal someone elses present they picked. One item can be stolen only twice. Once from the original person, the second steal from the person who stole it first. You can steal it back. The more people playing, the more fun. There was one year where there was a box that was a toy gun, but when i opened it, inside was toliet paper roll. It was stolen from me, and I then found out there was a $20 bill inside.

Sounds like an intense secret santa

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well I guess the way our family plays is the normal way, after reading the article. It's not intense at all. It's all fun and games and jokes with the family.

Our game is for all ages. Here's a better way to explain it. http://dirtysantarules.blogspot.com/2010/11/dont-worry-theres-nothing-adult-about.html?m=1

Eh, Christmas is mostly commercialised now anyway.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I feel like the Christmas thing is just a matter of wording. I would consider "celebrating" Christmas to be a christian thing because what else would you be celebrating other than Christ's birth. But I believe you can embrace the Christmas spirit and participate in some of the Christmas activities without being christian.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

...Well I don't know anyone that would call you an evil Satanist because you don't believe in God. If you didn't believe that God existed then why would you believe that Satan exists? It doesn't make any sense.

I'm not Christian, but I celebrate Christmas simply because pretty much all of my family is Christian, so me not celebrating would be deemed wrong. It also gives me an excuse to get out of school and see my family for a change. I enjoy the spirit of giving and receiving, and Christmas is the best excuse I have to do so.
