+61 You don't allow the stigma/label (good or bad) on something to affect your own outlook on it. Amirite?

Sometimes, if everyone thinks something is sooo good, I will actually go out of my way to avoid it.

I'm of the opinion that it's inevitable, if not on some subconscious level.

Everyone wants to think they aren't, but they clearly are. Everyone avoids certain things without truly considering them.

I do think that most people's opinions on things are affected by popular opinion. That's why we have trends. The other two groups are the ones who avoid trends and ones who form their own opinions.

I feel like posts like this are a trap. It's basically saying "You're not a dick, amirite?" and you have to vote yes. But as much as we consciously aim to be completely unbiased, other peoples' opinions do affect what we think of things, at least initially.

I think it is very cynical to assume people act like sheep in these matters. I like to believe that most people use reason and experience to form their final assessment. Stigma, trend, labels, etc. might have some effect on you initial reaction to something but do they really affect your outlook?

Those who blindly follow trends because it's what the cool kids are doing would be the ones to disagree to this post if they are answering honestly. I certainly don't think everyone acts this way.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe that seems a little harsh. I'm not saying everyone who disagrees is following trends blindly. Just that those who I refer to would vote down

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I get that but was forced to change my vote because the wording "don't allow" and I honestly - occasionally - "do allow" trends to bring about my outlook.

If the label on a can of food says it's gone bad, then I'm not eating it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's probably not a bad idea.
