+50 Words like "stupid" and "retard" are as hurtful as racial epithets. The pain caused by these labels can last a lifetime. Amirite?

I got told I was stupid for wanting to do things or for liking things way too often.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Having been labeled //retarded// by the state, placed in special education, and tormented by "normal" kids calling me “retard” has made me extra sensitive to this issue. I still cannot think about those events without choking up. It was difficult for me to write this post and even harder to write this comment. I do not know what it feels like to be called racial slurs but if it feels anything like being called a “tard” then it borders on the unforgivable.

I also just thought of 'freak'. That's bad one to be called too.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I was always called "weirdo." Some bitch threw a rock at me because I'm weird.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Damn rocks. I've had multiple thrown at me while being called four eyes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I had the same experience. Day care people didn't do anything about it, either.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Honestly, what do people have against seeing

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't know, but apparently, adults didn't care either because the little shits would do so right in front of their parents and their parents didn't do shit.

The word "stupid" can sometimes be used tastefully, but the word "retarded" should not be used outside of the medical term.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You are right. Using stupid as a cuss, for example "this stupid computer keeps locking up." Is OK-ish. But saying "this retarded computer" makes the speaker look callow (in my mind.)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's pathetic because I've seen more people get in trouble for saying "stupid" than "retarded." I mean, sure, "retarded" is a word used in the medical field, but it's also used as an insult and it's intended to have more sting than "stupid."

My dad would ask me rhetorical questions like, "what are you, stupid or something". Ahhh, good times.

I have trictotilamania and was required to take special ed classes for it in elementary school. Despite having no differences from every one else besides a bald patch on my head I was called a retard and a weirdo. I literally did not care. I was never hurt by it. I never thought twice of it. I had fine friends, and a fine school life. Am I missing something here?

By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din

by Anonymous 11 years ago

seriously, good for you. I'm happy there are people like you

by Anonymous 11 years ago

hmm not everyone is going to have the same experiences/reactions there can also be drastic differences in the situation it's a lot to consider

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You want a cookie for not being offended?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You fucking know it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's important to note that racial or intellectual insults should only ever affect you if they were used maliciously (As in Vic's case) and not jokingly, as they are used i normal conversation. If you let joking ones affect you, they may just be true.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't think using any type of slur as a means of a joke makes any sense. If you assume that you can use a slur in a context that will automatically be recognized as "humor", then you are closed-minded.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's a difference between saying something jokingly and saying it as a joke. It just means casually. Like how friends can say things like "Hey you fucking bastard haven't seen you in so long!" and not actually mean fucking bastard.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So ironically? I guess I did not understand the context of your comment.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No. Ironically means something like counter intuitive. in the hipster definition, it means to do something not because you enjoy it but because you want to mock those who do. Similar to "Ooh, look at me, I'm ______. I like to ____,____ and I can _____" This just means not seriously, or not meaning it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Verbal irony is when one thing is said where the opposite is implied. You understand that your friend is not a bastard, but you call him that anyway. That is irony by definition.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Your grasp of irony is very limited.
