+93 It's annoying when you say something negative but true about yourself and someone is like "aw, no that's not true, you're wonderful" and you're just like "Dude. Yes it is, it's OK." and them trying to tell you otherwise just reinforces that the trait is a negative thing and that's why they're trying to convince you that you don't have that trait and it ends up making you feel worse in the long run, amirite?

When I say something negative about myself, I'm not fishing for compliments as everyone seems to think. I'm just saying it either because it relates to whatever we're talking about or I need help correcting the problem. Which makes me wonder, how many times have I thought someone was fishing for compliments when they said something negative about them self and wouldn't listen to anything positive everyone else had to say...

I've done that but usually after I explain that I don't really care about whatever flaw it is they stop trying to make me feel better.
