+38 Criticizing someone is different from "not accepting them for who they are", because everybody should try to improve. If they don't see it as a negative trait, then there's no reason to be defensive, because good natured criticism is not rude and should be appreciated when given politely and in a proper situation, amirite?

The problem here is to distinguish constructive criticism from gratuitous criticism. One can criticise another with a good intention, with the other seeing it as a personal attack. That's why it is often easier (I don't mean better) to pretend everything is fine...
