+3 It's strange that people use an ellipses to separate their thoughts online, because a single period does the exact same thing and takes less time, amirite?

my cousin does that and when people do that I think of awkward pauses or dramatic pauses he doesn't do it anymore though "I don't know Lemur...I don't think it works like that...I'm surprised she lets you out of the house..." If I had to guess I would assume that the person is showing a longer pause or just doesn't feel like clicking the space bar people favor certain keys over others for me I rather go to the next line to show a pause when it'd be easier just to use a period or comma that's just me

I think we do a lot of things with electronic messages to try to make up for tone or body language (like **bolding** or //italics// for emphasis, using ellipses, or emoticons y). After all, non-verbal communication is at least 70% of communication. We don't have those things when we're not speaking directly to each other and so we're finding ways to show it through text.

Sometimes I use ellipses where I think a semicolon would have been correct... I've been told to never use semicolons.

why?

I think it was because they are not well understood, but I like this explanation better: Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college. -Kurt Vonnegut

Weird considering they never spoke of the semicolon in college**__;__** yet, it was drilled into my head in high school. maniac you see what I did there? it looks funky underlined
