+13 I have about decided that animals may in fact be smarter than humans. They have figured out how to live without paying any bills, no government, no transportation besides themselves, no lawyers or legal issues, no divorce or sexual identity issues, and no bad habits that damage their health. Amirite?

I don't think we have strayed, but you're right that we're slaves to institutions we've established carelessly. The path to utopian civilization is one we must take upstream, in which the current diverts us left and right, and every wrong turn so far has had us correct ourselves, even though progress has been painfully slow. What makes us seem so trapped is the things we've been too lazy to see the errors in, and have expediently concluded were good enough. So some aspects of society are far ahead of others and after we look at one for too long the sudden glance towards others seems like a glance back to the dark ages in respect to sophistication and morality, but overall we're getting there.

I disagree I would not want to be an animal in this world the population of lions has been halved in the last twenty years and I recently watched a documentary about a baby elephant that was taken into care after people attacked it with an axe after killing its mother, there was no reason for this attack. There are thousands of examples like this I strongly disagree that animals are better off than we are.

My dog never helped me with my calculus. :(

Well, the animals do not have the mental capability to do these things. They aren't figuring out how to live without them, they just don't have the capacity to think it. And well, you certainly could live in the middle of no where.

Nah, yeah, wild animals don't have to live through the trappings of a society; they can just rape and kill whoever they feel like.

I'll agree cause it's a clever way to say that humans have become way to complicated for our own good. Animals didn't "figure out" anything. That just so happens to be the way they live and how we lived at one point in time. Our intelligence has made our life overly complex for us.

animals have their intellect and their problems, we just don't recognize it.

There are scientists out there who dedicate their lives to studying animal behaviour so they might recognise it even if we don't.
