+58 There aren't many reasons to be mean, but there are a lot of reasons to be nice. Amirite?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

by the way this isn't saying there are reasons to be mean

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Not to be an ass, but there are reasons for both. Being "mean" sometimes is necessary. Were we "mean" when we took over Hawaii? Yep. But at the time, possession of Hawaii was vital to trade and access to East Asia.

it doesn't say they are no reasons to be mean it says that aren't many reasons

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Well I'm just gonna be a realist and say there are many reasons for both lol.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I think that's more pessimistic considering how there are more issues with mean

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Would Hitler have got what he wanted if he was "nice?" Would America be colonized if we were "nice?" Think about it; I guess it's a trifle pessimistic but the world is spun by what is called "meanness." However much we human's like to ignore it, it holds just as much of a presence in the world as good.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

I didn't say it doesn't hold a presence I said that there are more reasons to be nice than mean (which means characterized by maliciousness and pettiness) saves a lot of conflict to be nicer

by Anonymous 10 years ago

When I say "hold a presence" I mean that "it holds a place." Without it, the world would be nowhere near where it is now. People often say that evil is the source of conflict, and while it sometimes can be, it is also a source of development. However wrong it may sound, "meanness" is just as reasonable as "niceness" and evil is as beneficial as good.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

disagree with that assumption the benefits of __not__ being raped or murdered outweigh the benefits of evils happening and I didn't say anything about eliminating evil all together just because there's a balance in the world doesn't mean it's necessary to have equal amounts mean and nice are not the same they both exist but they're not equal or equally important

by Anonymous 10 years ago

And that seems to be where we disagree; you think that good outweighs evil, but I think the two are equal.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

they're not equal does the amount of good you've done equal the evil? doubt it and again this post isn't about any of that it's about how there are more reasons to be nice than mean and to be mean is malicious and petty it's more beneficial to not be mean being mean tends to hinder progress more than being nice nice and mean are not equal they are opposites and that is their main link I mean you keep saying they're equal but I don't see any examples of how they're equal you just state it

by Anonymous 10 years ago

We're getting a bit off topic honestly. Sure, I've probably done more good than evil, as you say, but does that say anything about which of the two is "better?" The original question was if there are more reasons to be nice then mean, and I think there is equal reason for both

by Anonymous 10 years ago

and what is that equal reason?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Well I said that already. If you see a homeless man on the street and you help him out and give him money, you feel good, there is that reason. But if you mug the homeless guy and take his money--now you have more money. I'm not saying I would mug a homeless guy, but I'm saying if I did, I would have just as much reason to help him as I did to take his money.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

it's implied here that reasons are good you have more money but you could get arrested so that's a reason not to steal from the hobo which makes things in favor of being nice

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Well yes. Being "nice" seems to be encouraged in today's world, and mugging hoboes is generally frowned upon (lol), however, I'm not talking about what society thinks is better. I'm talking about what is beneficial to one's self.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

getting jailed isn't beneficial so again the reasons are in favor of the nice and it's frowned upon because it harms someone someone who plays a role in society if that person is harmed they may take that harm out and the cycle continues yet another reason so it's obvious the reasons to be nice are more in number and why do you get to decide who its beneficial for? this post doesn't say more reasons for yourself it's says more reasons in general

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Alright. In that case then, I may've misunderstood a little. I thought you meant for oneself in the question. Good benefits society, I'll give you that, but evil benefits one's self, and since humans are wired, like most animals, to put themselves first (which is a natural survival mechanism) that is the equal reason I'm talking about.

by Anonymous 10 years ago

actually no humans like many other animals (like monkeys) are social beings so peace and harmony are important hence one possible reason why people risk their lives for their community members and offspring

by Anonymous 10 years ago

because nice matters....

by Anonymous 9 years ago

There's many reasons for both. People have plenty of reasons to be mean, even if they sound petty.
