-26 In this age when we're recognizing discrimination and seeking to eliminate it, the idea of separate men's and women's rooms occurs to you as being discriminatory. You can't even imagine anyone ever trying to right this obvious injustice. Amirite?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

don't see it as an injustice it is discrimination in terms of making a distinction but it's not negative one gender isn't treated with superiority over the other when it comes to these bathrooms it's not injustice that the men's room has urinals and the women's doesn't anyways I think urinals should be gotten rid of I read they cause more splash-age and of course, the whole having to expose yourself since the bathroom leaves the person vulnerable I'm thinking it's to avoid sexual harassment as well also, in India there are trains that are sometimes segregated so one gender doesn't harass the other and the people can ride in peace without having to worry

by Anonymous 9 years ago

How would you know how much splashback there is from a urinal? You do not have to expose yourself and even if you thought using a urinal meant you did, you're free to pee in the toilet stall.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I read a forum where the guys unanimously agreed that the urinal has more splashing than the toilet how else would you urinate without exposing? if there was no exposure why does anyone care about looking over? that's probably another good reason to keep bathrooms gender segregated unless it's one of those single bathrooms

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Those guys are apparently all peeing in a spot that creates a ton of splashback. The trick is to send in the stream at an angle when it hits. And it doesn't expose because urinals often have walls and for those that don't, the only way you'd expose yourself is if you're standing 3 feet back. Men who care about others looking over are simply self-conscious about the size of their penis and are afraid other men are just waiting to see.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I did not know about the walls I never see walls on tv or maybe I didn't notice also more splashing with standing up than with sitting down

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I feel as though the time saved is worth a tiny bit of splashing that may occur. And then there's the argument about how germs (from splashback) can strengthen the immune system as opposed to avoiding germs as much as possible.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I don't think people should be rushing bathroom time everything is already rushed why can't people just enjoy relieving themselves? stop and smell the roses or whatever I guess you might be a in hurry but really if I'm in a hurry I'd just wait they are other ways to get germs pick your nose or something splashing back urine is just a no-no maybe because urine is considered impure but boogers are constantly flying out with sneezes so I was thinking about urinals and it really doesn't give people coverage maybe if they had actual dividers it'd be different also this guy was complaining about how some guys expose their buns when they use the urinal do guys get made fun of if they pee in the stalls? and do you think bathrooms should become co-ed? Do you think bathroom gender segregation is wrong?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Lol... stop and smell the roses in the bathroom? I'll pass. I wanna get in and out as quick as possible because bathrooms are not pleasant places to be. Attached is a picture of a row of urinals. Take note of the walls (in maroon). They offer ample privacy. Now suppose they weren't there. Privacy has decreased a bit, but you still have the walls of the urinal and ultimately, you simply don't march in staring at everybody's crotch. Oh, and as mentioned above, there's always the toilet stall with complete coverage. http://data.amirite.net/user_images/53b0a7d483955.jpg Logan pretty much covered the exposed butts and guys getting made fun of for using the stalls. There's actually an unwritten, unofficial etiquette to using urinals. Like if someone else is already at one urinal, you use the urinal furthest away from them. You also never talk or make eye contact, however many men disregard this courteous act. Some march right up next to you and feel like striking up a conversation. For those situations you just suck it up, piss, and get out. It's annoying to some but not the end of the world. Ehhh.. I'm indifferent on bathrooms being co-ed. I definitely think it goes without saying that it should be up to the establishment whether it has co-ed bathrooms or not; it shouldn't be a legal issue. I do kinda think I would feel uncomfortable defecating in the same room as a female though. I do not think bathroom gender segregation is wrong. However, I don't think either should be mandatory.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I had to pee in a urinal last week and it was dreadful. I much prefer toilets.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Actually, urinals save water. To play devil's advocate, I've been at events where the vast majority of people are one gender or the other. In those cases, one restroom is overcrowded and the other goes virtually unused. Having unisex bathrooms would give those who need a resource access to it. It just logical.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

My mom uses the men's restroom if there's a line at the women's and no one at the men's. People in line get so upset when they see her do this. She doesn't give a damn.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Smart

by Anonymous 9 years ago

She could be arrested or fined for this. Don't you long for the day when she can pee in freedom in the first available receptacle?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Yea, it's probably enforced more the other way around though (if a guy uses the women's). i don't think people are going to complain the same way about a woman using the men's. Double standard.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I agree! It's totally unfair that I got arrested at Mardi Gras for sticking out my dick to get some beads. At least I was giving them a target to throw at -- kinda like horseshoes or ring toss.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

" People in line get so upset when they see her do this."

by Anonymous 9 years ago

However, they don't try and report her. I bet someone would if it was a man entering the women's

by Anonymous 9 years ago

that double standard probably exists because in general, males tend to be physically stronger

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Yes, there are reasons for double standards. I don't know what to say to not make it sound like i'm arguing or brushing this off. I was only pointing out the double standard.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

not always good reasons, though

by Anonymous 9 years ago

What does that have to do with it?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

it means that escaping danger would be easier for males based just on strength

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Still not following... so Kumquat stated that people would most likely report a male for using a women's restroom than a woman using a men's room (keeping the assumption that it's a 1 person bathroom). Then your comment about men being stronger... Then you really lost me with the comment about escape being easier for males... Where does escape come into play here? How does being stronger mean more people would report a man?

by Anonymous 9 years ago

because if something happens in the bathroom males are more likely to be able to escape danger that a female inflicts because of this people aren't as worried when females go into the male's bathroom

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I disagree. I think it's because of a stigma about "the other restroom" which neither sex has really experienced (except maybe on very rare occasions). Now, realistically, both are probably about the same... nasty places to be; horrible in some places, decent or even nice in others. However, I feel like people //imagine// the men's room being this absolutely disgusting hell hole, with graffiti and feces on the walls (because men have the stereotype of being pigs, right?) and the women's room being some elegant place, with plush seat warmers on the toilet seats, potpourri and flowers, and expensive hand soap (because women have the stereotype of being delicate little flowers who don't defecate. Ever.). So that said... a man going in a woman's bathroom causes more of a stir because "omg! He's going to go into the nice restroom and will mess it all up and probably masturbate all over everything while he's at it! That perv!" While a woman going into a male restroom is a woman going into a war zone. God rest her brave soul. That's just my assumption of how others think though. To really know, you'd have to ask multiple individuals why they would be okay with a woman using the men's room but not a man using the women's room. Maybe it's a "respect lady's and give them priority to restroom usage" kinda thing for other people. I don't know.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

well someone told me women's bathrooms tend to be dirtier and DW2 also said this "As restaurant manager I can say that from working at several different locations the Woman's restroom is almost always worse off at the end of the day" if this is true for the majority of bathrooms I have no idea why but I'd really like to know I don't think it's what you said because females know that it's not the cleanest place I've found toilets with mushed turd all over and diarrhea and other things I don't feel comfortable mentioning people just don't feel obligated to clean up a place that doesn't belong to them which I think is a very cruel way to think

by Anonymous 9 years ago

My comment wasn't about which restroom was //actually// dirtier, but rather which restroom most people //think// is dirtier. I think we can both agree that public restrooms are disgusting, mostly for the reason you mention: people don't feel obligated to clean up a place that doesn't belong to them. And well, people know for the most part that some employee will have to clean it up eventually. Definitely cruel.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

people do that to my bathroom, too when there's like a party because they know I won't be able to figure out who did it there's these people I've never seen showing up someone used my bathtub as a toilet and I just felt like crying people also use my hand towels as buttwipes on TWO occasions I threw them out but I couldn't throw my bathtub out and some have left surprises all over the carpet on more than one occasion I know this is sorta off topic but I like to rant about it I guess people do think the women's bathroom is cleaner but that seems like such a trivial reason for segregation and it's not one I'd ever think about

by Anonymous 9 years ago

No, that's stupid. We have different genitals and different bathroom needs. I'd never wanna go to the bathroom with men, woman and children in the same room.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

There's equality, and there's justice. Equality is making it all equivalent for everyone, in this case abolishing different bathrooms. Justice is making sure people won't be harassed by the opposite sex, and making sure people are comfortable doing such a private thing. In this case, I vote justice over equality, because some things require separation.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I don't particularly find it discriminatory, unless one gender's bathrooms are purposefully made smaller or less adequate.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

If co-ed restrooms become the norm, tampon producers should wrap their products in less deafeningly loud materials.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

As a woman, i'm really uncomfortable with the idea of men being allowed to use the same restroom as me. I see it as an invasion of my privacy.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Men and women should feel comfortable in such a vulnerable time. Men are insecure and women would not feel safe. Can you imagine the perverts that would hang out in the women's room? No...I am afraid it's a novel idea in the quest for gender neutrality, but let's not take things too far. We still must account for human nature, modesty, and people's safety.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I don't think I would have agreed otherwise, but I once used a public unisex restroom and it felt totally normal that there were both men and women there, and when I thought about it after the fact, it seemed silly that there would be bathrooms for the separate genders. I have since heard transexuals and transgenders speak on the matter and it's definitely a source of distress for them, and it's such an insignificant thing. Popularizing unisex restrooms would be pretty harmless, though some people would probably be unhappy about it, but I think it would be beneficial in the long run.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

I hope bathrooms stay separate. I've used some unisex bathrooms with stalls and urinals, and, even though it hasn't happened yet, I would feel very uncomfortable if an underaged girl came to use the bathroom while I did. Even though I'm a young adult male, and not an older adult male, it feels strange.
