+39 Cosplaying is not a nerd thing anymore, it's getting pretty awesome, and if you're good at it you can also profit and mantain yourself from cosmaking. Amirite?

Seems like fun, but still very nerdy.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Maybe, but it's the awesome kind of nerdy. I love cosplaying :D

by Anonymous 9 years ago

It's DEFINITELY nerdy as a hobby. People who do it as an occupation however aren't really any different from other models.

I think what this means is "nerdy things" are starting to become a trend, and therefore not a reason to get bullied or laughed for anymore. Nerds are the new "cool" (I mean, with new tech, TBBT and the Avengers frenzy, it's not unheard of). PS: Sorry for my English, still working on it :P

I'm pretty sure most people think of cosplaying as pretty strange and not particularly cool. People talking positively about cute girls in sexy cosplay doesn't count since it's not really about the cosplay anymore in that case, is it? Acting nerdy is trendy, being nerdy isn't.

Well, I'm a cosplayer and it's a little of both. There's people who's nerdy and there's people who act nerdy and there are some who are both. But if you just act it, someome in the fandom will eventually realize you know nothing about comics and you'll be The Unwanted for a really long while. But inside the fandom, the one who knows the most or the one with the best cosplay would be the most popular. It's like highschool but upside down. The important thing is, all those nerdy people (me included) have a place to be themselves and be happy with their nerd hobbies (which I think is pretty cool anyway, no matter what others think).

Well, it goes without saying that the respective fandoms enjoy it, I mean, people who have accepted cosplay as "not-weird" will obviously not find it weird. But the majority of the population don't belong to fandoms where cosplaying is a common occurrence.

Oh but it's starting to become less and less people who think so. We are getting really good feedback from general audiences, having the chance to make public, free events without a bunch of jackasses throwing things and calling us names. In my country we actually get interviewed for known newspapers and radio shows pretty often. It's a huge trend. I mean look at 9gag, that's like the epicenter of nerdiness.

by Anonymous 9 years ago

9gag is *not* the epicenter of nerdiness. The fact that you think so bothers me a bit actually, not sure why. Nerdiness is allowing yourself to get so involved in something that it makes you see that something completely differently from how most people see it. Maybe not a perfect description, but it's basically allowing yourself to love something beyond what could be considered normal, or sometimes even beyond what could be considered reasonable.

I disagree, but well. I don't feel like starting a discussion. I guess as long as people respects each other everything's fine. We don't like to be called unreasonable, I guess that's what we're trying to stop. Judgement. That's all. It's not nice to be labeled like that. I have a job, a carreer, I'm not a fat freaky who lives with her mother or something stereotypical like that. Just a normal person with a "different" hobbie.

True. I'm a tour guide and I'm about to get a tourism degree but sometimes I make more money cosmaking. It makes no sense but there is a lot of public in that department! I'm making more props that tours these last months haha. And I started this by cosplaying, I still do. I'm currently working on a Lady Sif armor, it's like I finally found something I truly enjoy. And that's all that matters to me. No more hate!

It's like you don't have to wait all year for Halloween to dress up as somebody. y

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Just because it is gaining popularity does not mean that it is not a "nerd thing" anymore. May be that just more nerds are interested it. lol. ore maybe lesser caliber nerds. :P

by Anonymous 8 years ago

I don't know about profiting from it, but I think it looks like fun and can be pretty cool.

by Anonymous 8 years ago

It's an art form if it's done well.

by Anonymous 8 years ago

It's pretty nerdy imo. It's not lame though. ...Unless those damned weeaboos are doing it.

by Anonymous 8 years ago

IMO it's still nerdy, but it can be cool.
