I would pick Tony Iommi he created a new sound because he lost his finger tips in accident and had to tune his guitar down in order to grip the strings and created the best music in the world heavy metal

Great band. I preferred Dio over Ozzy although nobody sang Paranoid like Ozzy in the early days. What do you think?

I agree about Paranoid, it's mine too. I think every band I ever played in attempted that song.

A lot of people don't know that Iommi invented the very first light-gauge guitar strings now used my most guitarists.

True I wonder how many people know he used the melted pieces of plastic coke bottles to take the place of his finger tips so he could grip the strings

Lead is heavy. It's atomic weight is not that far from gold. So, it has to be a heavy guitarist, but not too heavy, because the stages are often build "just so"... Well... Shit. This is a tough one, even when taken seriously. It's difficult to determine, who has influenced whom, in the bigger scale. Some say... Well, not the Stig obviously, but... Shit. Does Jimi count as a lead? I'm a huge fan, but he played it upside down, so I'm not sure if people want to be upside down, while playing. **** it. I'm a Finnish heavy metal enthusiast and I say nothing of importance here. Well, that's not new. If you're not happy with Jimi, then I have to start spamming some Nightwish here. ;o) ;o)

Seriously probably Cuck Berry had the most influence on the way rock guitar is played by many. There are lots of stylists that had huge influence but for wide spread basic technique?

I'd suggest anyone who created a different sound or style that others were inspired by. Eddie Vanhalen would be one, The Edge from U2, his sound and style were very unique, also Santana. Mark Knofler (Dire Straits) is another one who's riffs were basically taken from country and other influences and he made a unique sound out of them. I'm not up on metal enough, but I know I've missed some there too.

There are many but i would say Jimi Hendrix because he started the different sounds (effects).

Leading people to experiment more with different sounds, instead of the usual guitar twang sound, everyone else was still using..

I agree about Tony Iommi and i could rattle off a hundred more guitar players...

Randy Rhoads,Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch on and on..

Yes he did. He doubled picked most of his solos, also reversing a lot of his licks which made his sound unique.

Can you imagine what he would of done had he not died at the age of 26?
I think that's why Randy's my all time favorite, it's what he would of become if he was still around.

BTW, wasn't Steve Vai one of you favorites?
