Explained by Rooster...

I know I'm tired of it. Why can't they just dump it?

Oh I am so ready to get rid of it. In southern Indiana we never had to worry about it but then one day they said "oh now we are going to observe it for the farmers to give them extra time". Sad thing is, even the farmers don't want it. (ono)

Yes.
I once got into an argument with a person about it. Her argument "for" it, was that the crops need that extra hour of sunlight for growing. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and wonder.

I like the spring forward part. Here, in the summer, light until 10pm. I hate it getting dark at 5pm in the winter.
They could leave it on, not do the fall backward thing.
I would be satisfied with that.

In fact, I wouldn't mind keeping DST all year round, except for the kids having to catch the school bus in the dark on winter mornings.

Didn't President Nixon extend DST well past the normal date and the kids were getting run over in the dark of the morning?

I don't know anything about an extension of DST under Nixon. I do know that the current extension of DST was put in place in 2007, when both houses of Congress were Democratic, and signed into law by Bush, so if kids were getting run over, Pelosi and Reid must share in the blame for letting such a law pass.

http://www.timetemperature.com/...extended.shtml

And BTW, Canada and Mexico soon followed suit with the DST extension, so I guess they (especially the Great White North, where the problem would be even more acute) didn't care about kids getting run over either.

And of course Obama and his majorities in the House and Senate could have easily rescinded the extension a year later, had they cared to, but they didn't, and for some reason, you never thought of that, or at least didn't care to mention it. (think) (biggrin)

Not bitter at all, just stating facts. The extension was passed by Congress; it was not an executive order, by Nixon, Bush or Trump, as you are trying to imply.

I might just as well ask why Trudeau isn't getting on it right quick, eh? The problem is worse in Canada. (biggrin)

Then you are bitter. Look... all I remember from that time was reading about how kids were being run over in the darkness. It could've been Johnson or Ford or Carter or a 100% Democratic **** Congress that made the extension. What diff does it make?

It makes no difference to the poor kids that got run over, agreed.

But it does make a difference to the liberal spin you initially tried to put on the issue: however it may have been passed, and without looking it up, it was automatically and reflexively some Republican's fault as far as you were concerned, Nixon in this case. (biggrin)

The grin in this case is sardonic, since your reflexive bias was exposed.

It was only after some probing that you admitted that a Democrat might possibly have been at least partially responsible, something I suspect you otherwise would rather not have done. (biggrin)

It's a scary concept. Where would the line eventually be drawn in a socialized medicine society with this thought process of personal responsibility? If you are a marathon runner, does that mean you can't knee replacement, if you are rugby player, you can't get fixed, if you're a meat eater.... if you're a drinker, if you're a horseman and get thrown....

Another week and we are back on GMT for six months. We tried keeping it all year for a year or two back around1970.Then abandoned the idea.I think more people would prefer lighter evenings-but it would still be dark by six in the depths of Winter. And mucking around with the clocks doesn't change the amount of daylight you get-just the hours that you get it.

The symbolism of the dark winter finally departing and the lights being turned back on again - in the form of the sun and its warmth - heralded the return of summer for me. All poppycock of course but why be in a perpetual state of hate about DST year after year?
