The fight against avoidable misery should be the only aim of public policy. Increasing happiness on the other hand, is best left to private initiative.

I would think that they are usually one and the same. The more misery I avoid the happier I am. :)

How do you feel about government owning amusement parks and night clubs?

Most things the government touch turn to shit. So I don't feel good about that. 😉

That's what I was thinking as well. Avoiding misery vs increasing happiness is like glass half empty vs glass half full, all depends on how one looks at it.

Avoid misery: feed, shelter and provide medical care - I agree
Increase happiness: provide entertainment - I thought I agreed, at first because I didn't like taxes subsidizing professional sports venues.

I changed my mind, I support subsidies for PBS, NEA, and national parks.

Put in general amusement parks, and other entertainment venues shold be private.

Avoidable misery - A teensy bit open ended. Sewer systems, roads, fire fighters, law enforcement all help avoid misery and I'm in favor of.

Precisely. I assume you would not support government subsidies of beauty salons and balloon factories?

Some people are miserable so they try to make other people feel the same to bring them down to their level. It is really a mental illness.

Some people always feel need to be miserable and aren't content unless they can find a way to make other people miserable too.

That is absolutely untrue.
While happiness is essentially an inside job externalities play a large roll

The only proper purpose of public policy is to prevent any other group from taking control. The duty of a citizen is to control his government. That is why governments always eventually treat their citizens as enemies of the state.
