The first rule of effective mass shootings is don't announce your plans. That'll foil it for sure. Except when you're Nikolas Cruz, I guess.

But a rifle association tho, doesnt that ring the bell that people there are armed?

Actually, shooters have quite regularly given warning signs. Crazy people don't play by the same set of rules. Mitchell Johnson, who, together with Andrew Golden, killed four kids and a teacher in an Arkansas middle school for example and gave a warning beforehand. Some kids listened, didn't go to school that day and lived.

There's been dozens of shootings. Nearly all discovered there were warning signs beforehand. Between political correctness and liberal privacy legislation, warnings were never turned into alarms and people died.

Contrary to the hyperbole spewed by those who fear...well, pretty much everything, except of course, their own hatred...the vast majority of NRA members seldom go out armed.

I see, I always imagined them doing things like minor gun conventions where they show off what's new and cool. Most gun owners are sane and good people, it just takes one whacko to go crazy and do such damage. I think it'd be a good idea to run psychological evaluation on gun owners every now and then to catch possible nutjobs before they do something.

Certainly there are such conventions, there are also seminars, book signings, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and all the regular activities of any type of association. There are also 50 different states here that each have their own laws. Some have reciprocal arrangements, others do not. Some states allow open carry, others do not. So at a national convention, some from out of state might legally be allowed to carry, while others are not. Often people may plan to end their evening by going out afterward, either simply because they are visitors to the area or to spend time with old friends or meet with others there from out of state...whether drinking will be involved or not, state laws, and the rules of the restaurants or venues they go to come into play. We really are not like the wild west here, though it may seem odd to foreigners.

Therein lies the rub...how often and who performs the evaluations? Do you think political bias may come into play with the doctors involved? I'll guarantee it will. If you sat down and came up with a script and you saw 10 different mental health professionals, following the script precisely with each, how many different diagnoses do you think you'd end up with? Ten. Guaranteed. Mental health is not a hard science, it is subjective. There is no blood test for crazy, no pathology lab test that definitively proves this disorder or that syndrome. Btw, do you know how disorders make it into or are removed from the DSM? By a vote. Seriously. And how many of those professionals voting do you suppose depend on an insurance code tied to the DSM to receive their high rates? How many have ties to Big Pharma?

There are laws on the books now to keep guns away from people with mental health issues. And domestic violence offenders. And felons. Funny that...those people don't seem to care about laws. And we have the FBI who was informed about the young man in Florida several months ago. They did a helluva job, eh? I guess they were too busy trying to unseat our duly-elected president, though, to worry about the kids. 🙁

Didn't the cerebral Biden once say that they can't check 40% of the gun applications?
Fast and Furious, after the program Wide Receiver was closed, lost guns in Mexico that were then used to shoot a border agent.
None of this makes me feel like they have a handle on any of the gun situations.

Actually, it seems Biden is the lone Dem who cited that figure with the caveat that he was not sure of its veracity. Obama, Biden, and over a dozen others quoted that figure, which was an assumption based upon a 1994 phone survey with 251 respondents.

JMHO here, Ozzy...but sketchy government "programs", like WR and F&F, have no place in any discussion on gun control and the 2nd Amendment.

The point of my post was that the government, once again, want to use a tragedy to control guns when they themselves have been unable to account for their guns. It wasn't the programs, it was the accountability.
The incompetence of those who are supposed to being doing the background checks, checking on tips and keeping the citizens, especially the children, of this country safe, have been proven to be woefully inept. That is the cause of these shootings, not the guns themselves.
The best observation, so far, is whomever said to make guns illegal, it will work as well as making drugs illegal has been.

One of the few scenarios in which the government displays frugality is in not letting a crisis go to waste.

I disagree, the programs were flawed, imho.

Agreed. Incompetence and ineptness are the most polite terms that define the government.

Agreed. Ironically, those calling for gun bans are the same ones who argue that outlawing abortion would simply move the practice from main street to the back alleys.
