It seems that whelm and overwhelm have come to mean the same thing which is why whelm fell into disuse. Both words were used in middle english commonly. It's one of those cases then.

"Its reputation is built on the backs of 3-series gone by, as this is the first ever 3 to merely whelm us."

Whelm is simply a stage between over and underwhelm, but in the old days that wasn't the original usage, as both words meant "to overturn" or "to be overturned".

In response to “Underwhelmed and overwhelmed mean something...

In a vocabularian's realm,
'Tisn't out of the question to whelm.
Though the usage is rare
And can NEVER compare
With over- or, say, underwhelm.

Wait a minute, guys!

Whelm is still recognized in current dictionaries as a word, so you CAN be whelmed.

Of course you can be whelmed. It's only that people are such drama queens that they have to go one better than that. Even in the garden Eve had to go one better than God commanded.
