+179 Some types of grammar are useless to learn, like diagramming sentences, unless you aspire to teach in a field related to that (and I can't think of one.) Techers should focus more on YOUR, YOU'RE, IT'S, ITS, etc, amirite?

Diagramming sentences is more important than you think. It's all about structure.

No, they really shouldn't focus on teaching the fucking basics. They should give a one-day lesson in fourth grade and then continue to more advanced topics. America already caters enough to the idiots. That's why we're behind in education, and we shouldn't proceed farther down that route.

While the finer points of diagramming may be useless, there are some benefits. For example, recognizing that a noun is the object of a preposition will help you use the right verb. (E.g. "The boat with the passengers is departing" vs. "The boat with the passengers are departing") Although it can become useless if too much time is spent on diagramming.
