+455 Smoking cigarettes should be illegal. Its harmful to the smoker, its addictive, its harmful to others (secondhand smoke) and harmful to the environment. Its worse than weed! amirite?

by Anonymous 10 years ago

Considering weed does absolutely nothing bad for you

by Anonymous 13 years ago

except kill off brain cells..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You mean the ones that grow right back in a matter of hours? Do some research.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

dude, chill. i didn't mean to offend you.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

He didn't show any signs whatsoever of being offended.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ummm... sorry to get into this (and I am pro-weed, by the way), but brain cells don't replicate like all other cells after maturity. Just so you know. **Sometimes it's better to take your own advice before you give it to others**

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, they get covered in TLC which just impede their use, if you stop smoking weed it goes away

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Seriously? the only reason they say it kills of brain cells, is because rosevelt funded a study to make weed look bad, so they did it by making monkeys inhale smoke with NO oxygen for three hours. THAT WILL KILL YOUR BRAIN CELLS!!! or how about marijuana is a clean burning renewable source of cheap energy? Henry Ford's first model T ran off of marijuana Ethenol, but Rockafeller sued him, and did a whole bunch of backflips to make weed illegal. There are no harmful side effects of marijuana, and you can make everything from cloth, to paper, to plastics with marijuana. so, do your research, and think twice before you speak; it's why you have two ears, and only one mouth. and it doesn't make you lazy either, thats another myth, its all about what YOU want to do while under the influence of marijuana. ALSO, you can't kill somebody in your car high either like you can drunk. compare cigarettes to marijuana again, it's like comparing apples to kittens.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I also learned all that from an episode of Family Guy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Almost everything we do is bad for us and the environment. The cars we drive are bad for the environment, half the food we eat is bad for us. My personal theory is if you wanna smoke, go ahead. Of course you shouldn't smoke around others due to second hand smoke but in the privacy of your own home, who gives a shit? And why should we make it illegal? If that's the case might as well make weed still illegal, or any drug still illegal because all drugs cause side effects that could potentially be harmful.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

weren't cigarettes illegal at one point?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you ban cigarettes, you will have prohibition all over again, and we all know how good that worked. Btw, bad for the environment? Methane actually makes up about 80% of the greenhouse gasses attributed to Global Warming, and you know where most of that comes from? Cows. Your car, your house, your ass all create pollution, should we ban those? Painkillers are addictive as well, but those are legal and regulated, like cigarettes. But yes, it is worse than weed.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree with you but just because something doesn't contribute much in harming the environment doesn't mean its not bad in that respect. It does make a difference. Like if everyone in the world ACTUALLY stopped smoking then its going to have a pretty good effect in the long run.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm sorry that someone else smoking has such a great impact on your life. Just don't be around someone while they're smoking if you're so afraid of secondhand smoke.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ok, check it. . . NO. When you make a substance illegal, you create an underground market. Organized crime's only major source of income is illicit drug-trade. The more substances that are illegal, the more well-funded they are. That only makes them better at killing our soliders/cops trying to keep them out of our borders. Also, this will eliminate quality control of the tobacco, so it will be even more harmful than it already is. Since it's such a large market, I'm guessing the Government currently makes a massive amount of money off of taxing it. If it were illegal, we'd lose all that money, putting us in an even worse economy. If it were illegal, it'd also be a criminal offence, and our prisons would be that much more crowded with people getting caught. Clearly the intentions are good, but the idea is all wrong. Prohibiton dose not decrease a substance's use at all, and if the substace is still used, regulation is the absolute best option. This applies to all non-weaponized things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand the logic, but actually smoking doesnt necessarily hurt others. It's illegal to hurt others with your smoking (smoking in non-smoking areas that were made to prevent secondhand smoking) but preventing it overall and restricting right is just stupid.

I'm so tired of people acting like marijuana is harmless, as if it's sweet tea or something. "It has been suggested that marijuana is at the root of many mental disorders, including acute toxic psychosis, panic attacks (one of the very conditions it is being used experimentally to treat), flashbacks, delusions, depersonalization, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, and uncontrollable aggressiveness. Marijuana has long been known to trigger attacks of mental illness, such as bipolar (manic-depressive) psychosis and schizophrenia."

At least you cited a source instead of spewing that "studies have shown it but I can't find it" bullshit. However, I'm kind of doubtful of the source, since most of the links are broken and at least some of the information can't be verified.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But only in people who are predisposed to it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Incorrect. Also, marijuana can actually accelerate or aggravate the disorders it is supposed to be treating.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Then how come all the people in my school who smoke it aren't schizophrenic or psychotic or anything yet?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

For the same reason every teenager that smokes cigarettes doesn't have lung cancer yet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer, though. Is it the same situation for marijuana and mental problems?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, alright.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wouldn't it be better to heavily tax it as it may stop young people from starting to smoke, and gets shitloads of money to the government. People should be doing more to stop the people who are already smoking, like subsidising nicotine patches and gum and support when you're quitting, that would be more benificial than forcing it underground.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's what New York is doing, taxing the shit out of tobacco. It's not bad here for all the taxes pissing off local business.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah in my country they're increasing the tax 10% every year until I'm m not sure how high ... pretty good because now prices are bloody high.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Both are bad for your lungs, both smell terrible, and both have negative effects. They both affect your relationships with other people. More people have lost people because of weed than because of cigarettes. They're both bad. I think it's terrible that so many people try to justify it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Moderate use of marijuana causes unnoticeable damage to the lungs. Someone would have to get high 25 times a day for years to do real damage. Weed has no proven long-term negative effects. How have people lost lost others from weed? You know why people justify it? They open their mind and read the facts.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've lost people. I've had close friends get into and they just started hanging out with other people who did it, and I was left behind. And it's just a stupid thing to do.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Are you implying that they're just as bad as eachother? Last time I checked, tobacco was the number one cause of death in the U.S., and cannabis never killed anybody.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying it's as bad, I'm just saying I strongly disagree with anyone doing either.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Cigarettes also have "third-hand" effects. Where just the odor of them lingers on clothing/furniture and is the same as secondhand smoking to other people, and just as bad as first-hand smoking to babies/unborn infants. It can cause asthma, lung cancer, etc
