+121 Black history month is racist. amirite?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Racism means favoring one particular race without respect to others. Black history month, black scholarships, black beauty pageants. Things that would be quite controversial if they were white only.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Things used to be white only, now the tables turn. Just gotta put up with that for a decade or two. Then we can all get along :)

by Anonymous 14 years ago

It's already been a decade or two. Almost four, actually, since all forms of legal segregation were abolished. I don't see how someone can claim to be against racism, yet support affirmative action, black history month, or other means of elevating minorities above caucasians. It's just skin color, people. Ignore it already.

Well I watched 'Mississippi Burning' recently, I think black people are owed a shit load. But that's just my opinion, it's not really an issue where I live.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

When you rely on a Hollywood movie to get your history from, it is going to be flawed beyond belief.

by Anonymous 7 years ago

Nobody is elevating anybody above Caucasians...What are you talking about? That was never the point of black history month. Black history month is suppose to educate you on great black people who would probably never be talked about any other time of the year. Purely for education purposes.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

You're so right. There should be a time of the year where we all sit in class and learn about what white people have contributed throughout American History. Oh, wait... Yeah Black History Month would be racist. If there wasn't HIspanic History/Heritage Month (October) or Asian History/Heritgage Month (May) (Yes, they exist. Look them up) And if American society hadn't spent decades making sure the accomplishments and contributions of black americans and other minorities weren't well known and that the contributions of whites were, I'd be behind you and your statement.

AMEN!!! ^.^

Agreed.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

If there was a White history month I bet you black people would complain about how unfair & racist that is :/ I'm mixed but im just saying black history Month is stupid... They should change it to history month

by Anonymous 14 years ago

...all year except for black history month we learn about white people, and your complaining over one month out of a whole year? 0_o

by Anonymous 14 years ago

If what we learned during black history month was intergrated into our regular ciriculum than I wouldn't have a problem with them getting rid of it. Frankly, the only time we learn about people like Fredrick Douglas, Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King is in February. And unfortunately those are the only people we really hear about. What about Benjamin Banaker? or Madam CJ walker? It's a shame. There shouldn't be a seperate event just so we can learn about people who were and are a huge part of our history. We should be learning about black thinkers, inventors and creators right alongside the white. Futhermore, I know even less about what the other ethnicities in this country have contributed. The American Education sucks.

exactly

And by the way, when you use phrases like 'you black people' it tends to give others the impression that you're both racist and ignorant. I would hope you're not either of those things but then again I could be wrong.

Black history month is NOT racist. It was developed because at one point we only learned about white people and nobody discussed any of the black pioneers thus, Black history month was created. This goes with everything else. BET was created because MTV only showed Michael Jackson and prince videos at one point and was mostly catering to white people. BET (before viacom bought it, now it's crap) showed videos that would NEVER have even aired on MTV. Same thing goes for the "black beauty pageants" some one commented earlier. Back in the day, Black women were not even considered beautiful and couldn't even be in a beauty pageant because she was black and then someone got an idea to have an all black beauty pageant to show that black women could be beautiful. Seriously man, you guys are really complaining over nothing. Black history month only lasts for a month, Black beauty pageants are barely promoted, and BET is basically the black version of mtv so either way they both suck.

I agree. It wasn't invented to 'seem superior to white people', it was made so that blacks wouldn't be tricked into thinking they haven't contributed anything to this society other than free labor. It wasn't even a month before hand, nor was it recognized nationally.

I'm not racist I just think it adds to the racism if we keep highlighting one race like in black history month. I'm half black and in my country we learn about black history all the time. There is no need to get defensive I'm half black & I've had to deal with racism too.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

How? How does it bring racism? O.k, Maybe where you're from they have Black history all the time but, For me where I'm from and growing up we only had black history for one month and then for the rest of the year, It's over. That's the point, Black history (in some parts of America, I don't know where you're from)is only for a month and I don't see why people complain about it. It's hard not to get upset when people don't understand the basic logic behind Black History month and call it "Racist" when CLEARLY it is not. Nobody ever says during that month that black people are better or anything like that, it just opens your mind to different people who would probably never be talked about unless it is black history month. Also, Nobody called you a racist so, why would you say "I'm not a racist"?

@#27120 I'm from a country that is 9/10 black people & it's in the Caribbean.Ilostmyshoe said I was racist. & I along with the other 60 people that agree that black history month is racist think so because it focuses only on black people when what we want is equality,if there was a White history month I would think it's equally as racist. Also BET(black enterainment channel) and other such things that single out black people from others are racist imo.maybe in your country they focus more on White history but in mine we do everything, egyptions,Greeks, american & black.

Don't think I don't want equality but in order for there to be equality, people have to have understanding. It took for somebody to come up with the idea for BET, Black history month, and things of that nature for people to get a broader understanding of black people (even though now, I wouldn't look at BET to get a broader understanding of black people, I would just ignore that station). Also, don't think that black people are the only people who have done this, you have Telemundo (Hispanic television station),BET,Sinovision (Chinese television station in New York)etc. You also have the ALMA awards, AZN excellence awards. So, why do you think people created these types of things? Don't you think that if people of color (Whether black, asian, hispanic, whatever) felt like they were being treated "equally" in the media they wouldn't have to create such stations? I mean come on, I can count all of the top Hispanic actors on both of my fingers.

hello:Continuation: In order for there to be equality, there has to be understanding first. How can there be understanding, if people don't understand the reason behind Black history month? When Black history month was created, it was not suppose to make people feel bad or hold black people on a pedestal. like what ilostmyshoe said: "If what we learned during black history month was integrated into our regular curriculum than I wouldn't have a problem with them getting rid of it." Also, If the other ethnicities had their proper shine in the educational limelight, Then we will truly have equality and we would not have this debate.
