I don't know about you but I wouldn't be willing to use the water that comes out of the ground/falls from the sky. We're not paying for only water, we're paying for water processing as well.

If you want to build a well to get water from for bathing, laundry, dishes, cooking, and drinking no one is stopping you

Except the fact that you would need to find a good spot and actually own it. Not easy to do in cities.

Petroleum, gold, and other natural resources also come out of the ground. But I agree with you, water is renewable, so it's different. But also, you're basically paying for the processing and purification, not the water itself
