+878 You wonder how everything got it's name. Example: Why is a chair.. called a chair? Seriously, how do these things get their names? amirite?

Probably originated from some sort of Latin word.

I think everything originated from Latin if you think about it. Latin was like the root language of all other languages.

Why were they named that in Latin? And why are swears, swears?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, Latin was just the root of the Romance languages. Plenty of languages came before Latin and many more are not related at all (like Chinese, Cherokee, Eskimo-Aleut, Swahili, etc.)

Very true. Thanks.

Where does Anglo-Saxon come from then?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's not true. Greek and Minoan are older. Babylonian and Persian languages even older than that.

Goodbye comes from the phrase "God be with ye", I learned that one today.

I think the better question is who invented the alphabet?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The first alphabet was made by the Phoenicians.

From etymology dictionary: chaere, from O.Fr. chaiere "chair" (12c.; Mod.Fr. chaire "pulpit, throne;" the more modest sense having gone since 16c. with variant form chaise), from L. cathedra "seat" (see cathedral) So, from Latin, but it had earlier origins than that, back to the beginning of language
