I got my first phone just before I joined secondary school (I was a month off being 12). It cost £15 and mum put £20 credit on there for me to use to contact her and other family and it took me over a year to use it up. Even now (15) I barley use my phone and I am still on pay as you go with a basic £30 phone because that's what I like. I don't need a fancy phone because I rarely use it and to be honest I don't believe young children should have phones, but once you go to secondary school, and especially if you make your own way there and back, you need a phone for safety reasons and to make sure your parents know what's going on.
