What is more immoral than war?"

Top Comment

Not going to war, if it is truly necessary. What would have happened if we had not gone to war in 1776, 1812, 1861, 1941, and were not at war with terrorism today? Each person has to either agree or disagree with all the other wars we have been in according to their own conscious, but sometimes, it is necessary. What is more immoral than surrendering instead of fighting for our rights and the freedoms we have?

You are a military man. An educated man. Not for a moment do I think - or should anyone think - you have led an unnecessary life. I'm going to reduce my ridiculously simple thought to this: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. What made these wars "necessary" to begin with?

The reasons cannot be reduced to a few lines on a post. The first war mentioned was to gain independence from an oppressive regime. I'll skip to WWII. What would have happened if we had done nothing after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? What would have happened if we had not joined forces to defeat Germany? What would the face of the world look like today and what freedoms do you think you would still have?
As a military man, I hate war. Almost all the soldiers who fight in them, hate them. That doesn't mean we don't realize that sometimes, they need to be fought.
We are at war every day, on a smaller scale in our towns and cities. What would happen if we had no police forces to maintain a sense of order? Chaos.

That's easy for me...Abortion.

However, I would like to add the following comment related to trying to even figure out what "morality" is in today's postmodern era.

First of all, I believe it must be determined as to what is the root, the origin, the basic, essential foundation of morality?

Is morality universal, objective, absolute?

Is it the EXACT, same, absolute standard for everyone, without variation for anyone, regardless of opinion, regardless of any degree of compliance/noncompliance by humankind?

Unfortunately, moral "relativism" has become the standard in this day and age, allowing all of us fallen, deeply-flawed human beings to rationalize our own wrongs into rights, and vice versa when applied to those with whom we disagree.

Is the following quote (arguable as to its origin) applicable to morality?..

“Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.”

Exactly, even in defence nobody wants war, we just do what we have to do.

Slavery was immoral, a war was fought over it, among other things. Should we have just kept it the way it was? Depriving our freedoms would be enough to consider fighting those who would do such things. I just finished "Killing England," so I may not be objective on this subject right now.

Victimizing innocents who haven't, beforehand, committed any wrongdoing toward their perpetrator where victimization would include: crimes of a sexual nature; kidnapping; fatal assault - murder; bullying; home invasion; torture, to name a few.
