+336 Why does England have a queen? millions of taxpayer's dollars are going to keep her castle all nice when all she did to deserve it was being born into the right family. it's all just for the sake of tradition, amirite?

I live in England, and must say I agree with you... to some extent. Although she DOES have some rule in what the government says.. but only if the House of Lords deny a Law being passed a certain number of times. & I agree with the Castle part, although she doesn't live in her castle for the most part. It's annoying. But most of our Tax goes into different things. not just her. mostly healthcare and the running of the government. Sorry about such a long comment. & i have agreed with you :)

She's really just a tourist attraction

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So ppl line up to take pictures with her? Sorry that's just what ran through my head Hahas How can she be a tourist attraction if there's all this safety precaution stuff

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well... a lot of the tax payers money which is described as going to the queen go to restoring and maintaining all her estates, country homes etc, which are really there for the tourists not the queen herself! So its money that is bringing in tourists, keeping people employed, helping the economy etc rather than just being spent by the queen.

I agree, but it's only like one penny per person.

She's just a figurehead now Only parliament holds power She's just eyecandy ;] ... And maybe because England would have to change their national anthem if the queen were to be gone

Tourist money, that's why.

and it's apart of our heritage. and when i say "our" i mean the people affected by the queen . i'm Canadian and i think only ignorant people hate on the royal family

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ahhh this really pisses me off the whole royal family costs the average taxpayer 68p a year and brings in millions of pounds every year due to tourism.

And most countries run by the Royal Family - the UK, Canada, Australia - are doing fairly well economically. I'm not saying they don't have money problems, I'm just saying their money problems aren't so much that they're not bringing in enough money, it's just misallocation in some areas. But it's not like the Royal Family is siphoning off money that could be used in education or health. They're already ok there.

awww come on now i love the monarchy the royals are such a part of british culture and history i love it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think I remember back in 1992 or 1993 that the Queen altered things and no longer gets much form taxes. Some, but not much. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Royal_Family

my AP Euro teacher told us that the tax payers took a vote if they would like to keep the queen and the majority voted yes, I guess it's just a part of their country....

The Royal family brings in tourist revenue and does not own most of what they have, rather uses it as a loan. Most of what they get is in donations so they do not cost all that much. The Queen is also a safety net. If a party got into Parliment and were extremists and destroying the country the Queen can revoke their power and take charge herself. She is a symbol as well as having uses. I would say she was worth every penny and real value for money next to MP's.
