+280 Lots of atheists celebrate Christmas, they're hypocrites. Amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A lot of Christians celebrate Halloween. Hypocrites you say?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Halloween isn't about ghosts and spirits and witches and goblins these days. It's about dressing up in a funny costume to get candy. Christmas is always about Jesus' birthday.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Halloween is a Pagan holliday. Also Jesus was born in August. Christmas was also a Pagan holliday called Winter Solstice.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're an atheist, right? So you'll never agree with me. And there's no point in arguing. I hope you find God someday hun.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually Im Unitarian and Im forced to learn about all religions, including the origins of Christmas.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Then why argue?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because YOURE the one who is being a hypocrite, if you think Halloween is silly than you should think Christmas is silly as well.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't think Christmas is silly. And if Halloween is so bad, why did we have a Halloween party AT MY CHURCH? I think you're just stuck in the past.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Im not stuck in the past. How Christian of you, as soon as you see Im winning the argument just insult me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Insulting you? What's so insulting about that?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think maybe even your church doesnt know that its a pagan holiday.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My church was just spreading the fun of Halloween. It's not like we talked to spirits and casted spells and stuff. We played games and had a costume contest.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But halloween isn't a christian holiday, so by that you are being a hypocrite, wether or not your church celebrates it if you do. People celebrate xmas to enjoy their family and "spread fun" just like your church does on halloween. Christmas has developed (for many families) to be about family and friends, not jesus' birthday, which, I might add, isn't in december, it was moved to december to correlate with winter solstice.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Halloween isn't really a holiday, or "holy day." just really has changed to going out in costumes. there are many suspected origins and tales... it truly isn't very religion centric.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

but you ignore the second part of my statement. and I only used halloween because it's the holiday people are bringing up. Halloween is a holiday, just like presidents day, it all depends on what you consider a holiday. I know many people who don't consider christmas a holiday.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Mostly even people who don't beleive in christmas take holidays for it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, they do. You know why? They don't plan to come to school when no one is there. That's why schools call it Winter Break, not Christmas Break.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

^This girl knows her shit.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you, love.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

christmas originated that way but over the years christmas and it's meanings have changed and it is generally accepted as the celebrations of jesus christ, while halloween has changed to be just a fun day to go out, not of really any religious meaning. atheists celebrate christmas now, in its current understood meaning, which is pretty hypocritical.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry, atheists *THAT* celebrate christmas now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's funny how most people don't actually celebrate Christmas because of it's religious ties, except maybe devout Christians. Most celebrate it as a way to bring family together and strengthen bonds between members of the family. Just like Halloween, Christmas, too, has changed it's meaning.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

christmas is known to bring families together, but it remains a rather religious holiday and quite centric of jesus christ, called CHRISTmas.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'd argue the exact opposite and say that it is not as centric of Jesus Christ as you believe it is. But, I do however believe that it really does depend on the area you live in. Yet, it's probably safe to say that, overall, Christmas is not much of a religious holiday anymore, or at least not in the same sense as it was before.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christmas remains quite religious and is celebrated in churches with services and bible readings, so it is centric of the birth of Jesus Christ and the celebration of his life, even today. Halloween is not a celebration of what it had originated to be and is not religious as it is known today. Halloween is more of a fun day celebrated by anyone in any way.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you were a TRUE Catholic, I don't think you would be receiving presents. It is, after all, Jesus's birthday. You would celebrate with the Bible and church. Presents mean you're celebrating it commercially. So you would be a hypocrite.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Now who said I was a catholic? Who said I was receiving presents anyway? Who said what I do and do not do on Christmas? Your argument is flawed but I appreciate your input. I am satisfied by what I have put into this post and whatever I have said is pretty much the extent of what I intend on saying, so i shall retire for the night.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haha just wondering, but do you vote up on your own posts? And I was using "you" as a term for people who think atheists celebrating Christmas are hypocrites

by Anonymous 13 years ago

WHY do I keep going back on my word? Damn this addicting site! I am exing out after this, I swear on Christmas ;) Yes I do it when 1 person votes me down, admittedly to be an ass. It makes me laugh when I do troll like things and admit to myself I am being an ass. Hey, it's not like I hurt anybody. :) I just thinks it's SO funny how you can vote on your own!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

LULZ YA it's hilarious.... /not

by Anonymous 13 years ago

By the way, I'm Jewish. Dammit Dammit Dammit I swore on Christmas.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haha, I like you, and you make a very valid point. If anything one should be "giving" gifts to christ for HIS birthday, not getting stuff. You're twisting your holiday more than non-christians.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I saw some movement on this window and you have made me smile. bye though!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm glad my criticism can bring a smile to your face. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Or kids and presents.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no, most families celebrate it as a way to get presents. Especially kids/teens.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and winter solstice is sort of a scientific thing, it was celebrated but that and christmas are understood to be quite different things. while one is religious, the other is scientific.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So you're saying that celebrating Halloween doesn't count as being hypocritical but celebrating Christmas does?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes. Glad you got the point.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christmas is as much of a social holiday meant for giving gifts as it is a religious holiday.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(marianababa) omigod!! im a unitarian too and iv never met anyone outside of my church that even knows what it is let alone belong to that religion! :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Go Unitarians!! Yeah I know about 5 of us outside of my church..:P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(marianababa):Ya there's ONE kid that goes to my school that goes to my church :P We always have to explain what exactly our religion is to everyone else because they have no idea

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I just say Fuck Off my religion shouldnt matter to you. Thats kinda hard though because I live in the south.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haha well everyone in my school (mostly) is catholic... i live in a very small town :P i told my other (catholic & lutheran) friends that we were learning about relationships and different religions and a whole bunch of different things in my church classes and they're like "what?! ur not supposed to learn about relationships in church!!!"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In case you havent noticed, most people do the whole Santa&elf thing for Christmas not celebrate Jesus's birthday. And going to church makes you a Christian as standing in a garage makes you a car. Now please be more open-minded. (Not because of your post, but the argument you had with Marianababa.)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Agree entirely

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, because lots of atheists go to church.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never said that they did. If you stuck your head out of your ass,you would see that I said that youre probably not a real Christian and only believe in all that jazz because your parents told you its right. Oh,and Im an atheist but sometimes I go to my parent's Sikh church to learn more about their religon...does that make me Sikh? No. And neither does going to your Christian church make you a Christian.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, when I was little, I used to head over to my best friend's house almost every single day. And on the weekends when I would sleep over, his parents would make us get up early to go to church. I didn't like the idea of getting up early to do that, but I didn't object. I went to that church basically every Sunday, but does that make me a Christian? I believe not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hallmark Christmas is pretty different than Christian Christmas.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How are we hypocrites?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I celebrate Christmas because it's a time to get together with family and have a good time.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I celebrate Christmas because my dad is Catholic and I'm a minor But my very-non-religious mother celebrates Christmas because it brings families together. I go for the non-religious aspect, which is more of a family thing and the whole Santa thing. We go for commercial, not religious. Like many other people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

my best friend is christian, but doesn't celebrate christmas, is she being a hypocrite even though thats what her church says?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christmas is a federal holiday in America. Anyone can celebrate it if they want to. Besides, whatever message christmas may have orignally been about has been lost under a massive pile of toys. And how about you Christians resolve some of the fundamental contradictions in your church before you criticize others.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well it depends if u think Jesus Is God or not

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i don't understand why christians always hate on athiest people.. if athiests are hypocrites for "celebrating" christmas.. then aren't all the other NON christians hypocrites too?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Next time, try to spell "atheist" right... But I totally agree with what you're saying.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No. All the other religions have their own view of Jesus' birth, so they celebrate their religous holidays.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

don't be so closed minded man, there's chinese people that believe in gods and goddesses that has NOTHING to do with jesus. They believe that there is a god for everything. The sky, the earth the wind etc. Jesus isn't the only possibility out there for how the world was created. And jesus wasn't even born in december. Other religions don't even know anything about jesus' birth. So sorry, not ALL other religions have their own view's of Jesus' birth.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Some people are unbelievably stupid.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just as the meaning of Halloween has changed to some, the meaning of Christmas has changed to some as well.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Let's be realistic: it's about the presents and you know it. It has nothing to do with being religious anymore 9 times out of 10. It's an excuse to play holiday music, get off from school/work, eat food, and exchange gifts. Whether you are Catholic or not should not determine whether you can partake in those exchanges or not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You guys do know that winter solstice is just the day that the northern hemisphere is farthest away from the sun, right? Halloween is celebrating harvest. Celebrating Christmas & calling it that when you celebrate it IS a bit hypocritical. You're celebrating something you dont believe in.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not celebrating the birth of Jesus, I'm celebrating the fact that I have time to rest before exams.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm an atheist. I celebrate christmas because my mom was forced to be a christian and we celebrate out of tradition. Christmas for us is just a time of giving and celebrating family. Regardless of what the holiday means to others, my opinion is that you shouldn't judge others in that way.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Anyone who celebrates a holiday that doesn't go with their religion is a hypocrite. Atheists who celebrate Christmas: HYPOCRITES. Christians who celebrate Halloween: HYPOCRITES. Same goes for Muslims, because I'm one myself and I know alot of backwards Muslims who celebrate Christian and Pagan holidays.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christmas has been molded into an American tradition, not just a Christian one. That's why I celebrate it. Also, to those who say that Christians can celebrate Halloween, look up the history.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Absolutely correct.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Everyone here is kinda right. On the Halloween note, "When Pope Boniface IV reconsecrated the Pantheon in Rome on May 13, 609 AD, renaming it the “Church of St. Mary and the Martyrs,” he established that anniversary as a day of celebratory remembrance for all of the Church’s martyrs. Pope Gregory III later changed the date of remembrance to November 1 when he dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica to “all saints.” November 1 became All Saints Day, otherwise known as All Hallow’s Day. The night before became All Hallow’s Eve (“Halloween” being a colloquial contraction of that phrase). While Halloween began as a localized celebration, Pope Gregory IV extended its observance to all of Christendom in the 9th Century AD." The end.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yet you disagree with me?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I neither agree nor disagree, but once I vote its not like I can take it back. I disagree with you on some things you said about Halloween, and some things you said about Christmas. You said your church celebrated Halloween, by spreading the FUN of it, not the ghosts and all of it and said that atheists celebrate Christmas as in just for presents and such. To me, that's the same thing as your church celebrating Halloween. Just my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I'm Christian myself, but I look at all different sides of an argument not matter what.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Glad you're a Christian then :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Fuck you. It's a cultural thing, not a religious thing. We have a tree...that's not religious. We don't prey to an imaginary man in teh sky.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(AnonE.Mouse): I'm soo sorry you haven't found God yet. But no matter what you think, He is real. Please find Him.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

http://www.atheist-community.org/atheisteve/?id=27 You're a complete bitch.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I hope you find God.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Christmas means different things to different people. Christmas for some means Jesus' birthday (even though it isn't) and for some it has as much religious meaning as Halloween has come to have.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay thanks I'll consider that :]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ha ha. I can tell you're just saying that because your tired of all the above comments. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I really did consider it, but I guess nothing anyone could say would change my mind about this

by Anonymous 13 years ago
